Justin: what do you think about this? The 'inside news' says that they want the hard parts: the DSLAM, the equipment and all. Well, are they going to move it out of the present COs and relocate them elsewhere or what? Is ATT likely to offer new DSL service in these areas (I think they do offer DSL presently)? What's your take on this? |

Umm.. Is it just me, or I'm I jinxed and could never hold on to a broadband line for any longer than 6 months? It took me almost an entire year to get someone to provide DSL for me. NorthPoint finally did the job, and here I am faced with an eminent shutdown. If that wasn't bad enough, I still have a second line via Telocity, but ahh.. Guess what?? The freaggin' line doesn't work after 5PM!! Optimum Online!!! Why won't you hurry up and roll cable Internet in the Bronx already?!?!? |

The article says they're not interested in the customer base. Basically, they don't care to cut everyone off at the CO. All they care to do is to make all that equipment available again for new subscribers. So.. In fact, all they want you to do is start over from scratch, and hope that your ILEC won't give you a hard time reconditioning your loop by saying you already have DSL on your line. Arrgghh!! This is so frustrating!! |

Nah.. Here in NY, customers who sign up for service with them order a DSLAM directly from Verizon, not NorthPoint. They do this to eliminate truck roll costs since they also provision my data service via line share. |

I would say they are really after the CBX-500 ATM switches more than the dslams. They by far cost more than the dslams and I would say make up most of the assets... |

If they don't want be in DSL they could be after something else, loads of aeron chairs for example..
If they do want to be in the DSL business, the DSLAMs are copper mountain and SDSL is a better fit for a business provider but an issue is the sales model I guess.. AT&T is probably not interested in an indirect relationship (letting ISPs front their sales efforts), hence they are prepared to let the subscriber base float away and to hell with them, rather than take on board a bunch of ISPs, who take half the customers money, and then go into competition with them anyway.
Who owns the customer? this was always the problem with DSL, and it came up again and again in all these chapter 11 cases. If the ISP owns the customer, AT&T may be forbidden to market to them directly.. they may not be buying the customer records. They may take months to setup the CO interconnections again, and peering points, perhaps they will start offering SDSL again at relatively high prices months from now. Cold comfort for people wanting a solution tomorrow.
Could also knock around Rhythms and Covad more - having to compete with not just the ILECs (who don't do business well), but AT&T with a plug and play DSL network they bought at a firesale?
But I'm just guessing. The ideal situation is if Rhythms finds some spare cash and outbids AT&T.. gotta wonder how MSN is going to react to this, they must have a few thousand soon to be very unhappy customers to look after. [text was edited by author 2001-03-21 22:43:17] |

Model 10 - 25k USD, Model 20 - 78k USD, back in 1998 anyway. poor Lucent, another dent in their revenue. [text was edited by author 2001-03-21 22:41:07] |

[qoute]Well regaurdless who wins the bid they are pulling out of wholesale DSL. I doubt MSN is seriously pursuing Northpoint because of their interest in Earthlink. Ill lay my money down on a Phone company.[/qoute]
Now not to point out that im right. Do you think ma Bell would just buy them to uproot their equiptment and move it somewhere else? hardly. Morelikely they will purchase them and offer new terms to the circuits that northpoint was contracted with before. I realy dont see ATT just liquidating dsl for a couple of Dozen atm switchs. thats ridiculous. Thats RIGHT a couple of Dozen. NP people just take care... ATT not going to give up on you out right.. Unless you got idsl... i bet you guys are going to get hosed. |

Microsoft has over 120 million in Northpoint, so you can bet they are one of the possible... There are way more than 24 ATM switches. A fully loaded CBX-500 with all the cards, redundant SP and power supplies is around $500,000.00 bucks. They(AT&T) could probably pick these up for pennies on the dollar...
