Don't advertise the service as "unlimited" if you aren't prepared to live up to your end of the deal.

I have not heard anyone advertise unlimited amount of data can be downloaded. Unlimited downloads - thats different. download 1 million 1 byte files.... Unlimited use is also different - how you use it is another story.
I guess its kind of those deals with the phone companies - switch to us from your 10 cents per call flat rate -to get unlimited calls! that usually gets lots of people, then they get charged like 8 cents per minute for every call. - How were my calls restricted or not limited before? lol - get the picture? |

Agreed, this kind of switch and bait BS is getting old and hopefully people are getting tired of it aswell. If only people would rally to stop this type of BS advertising I would definately support it. |

Well the article was quoting the plan as:
quote:
. . .unlimited PCS Vision data access at no extra charge for three months and an additional $10 per month after that.
I don't think a claim that "access" and "downloads" are different things really works. I think that's just mincing of words and really is meaningless.
When they say "unlimited data access" -- what are they saying then? You can connect 24x7 but only download 2k per day? If that's the case then they need to say so.
This is just a simple case of the carrier using vague twists of terminology...and a failure on their part to manage their contracts.

| reply to detth Sprint PCS actually has a clause in their contract against hooking their phones up to a computer and downloading large amounts of data. Not to say it cannot be done, but they have plans with matching prices for that kind of usage. Obviously Verizon didn't have the foresight to see this coming and place limits within their contract.
My question is what kind of people are trying to download 24/7 off their cell phones? Current wireless Internet speeds are just barely broadband. Downloading lots of large files would probably still entail a lot of wait time when compared with cable and DSL speeds. I would hardly find it worthwhile unless you're still on 56K or AOL. -- "It's a butterfly!" -- kid from the MSN 8 commercial |

No one is limiting you from accessing their network. If that was the case, then rules would be set such as - you may only access on Fridays and Mondays at such and such a time. You can access the network whenever you want with no restriction. The data transfer is what seems to tick them off. -- B.S Computer Science,CCNP,CCNA,CNA,CCSA,CCSE, A+Network + |

You need to bait before you can switch. But anyhow...
Providers need to have some sort of foresight as far as establishing their plans. A bigger problem than them backpedaling on their originally offered plans is that they didn't stop to think that someone would go bandwidth/call/download crazy if they made something unlimited. If they'd stop and think about the future for once instead of being giddy beyond belief with the idea of new subscribers and more dough, then stuff like this wouldn't happen. -- Sure would be nice to be eligible for broadband..any kind of broadband. |

You don't pay any airtime for your data access (hence 'unlimited'). We're talking about the new '3G' network here. Not the old school wireless web. |

The SPCS $10/mo "unlimited Vision" plan includes browsing from the phone ONLY; for ANY tethered (laptop/PDA) connectivity customers must subscribe to other plans -- but people have figured out how to use their laptops/PDAs on the $10 plan anyway. Similar applies to Nextel, which offers unlimited WAP for $3.50 to $15/mo depending on what sites you want to access and what messaging services you want, but they plugged the "free tethered data" hole long ago by issuing only private IPs (and restricting access from those private (10.0.0.0/8) IPs to their WAP gateway only) to WAP-only customers and public IPs only to PacketStream/PowerApps customers.
VZW's WAP does not use packet data (even brand-new phones use old-style CSD -- VZW is more or less alone in not supporting WAP via packet data) so there is no "loophole" to cheap access like there is with SPCS and used to be with Nextel. VZW's "unlimited" Express Network data plan is $100/mo -- MUCH, MUCH more than the $3.50-15 SPCS and Nextel charge for unlimited WAP...
Hence, the SPCS/Nextel situation and the VZW situation are IMO apples and oranges -- the former is people gaining unauthorized access to their data networks (a legitimate beef), the latter is "excessive use" of a connection marketed as unlimited (a questionable beef.)

Someone further up in this thread made a note about 'unlimited downloads' rather than 'unlimited bytes' or something to that extent. Well, the minimum possible size is a bit. So let's say someone downloads an infinite number of one bit files. Hmm... they've now both downloaded an infinite amount of files and and infinite amount of bits!

The odd thing is that there usually is an explicit "catch" for the "free" nights and weekends plans -- they're actually limited to 1000 or 2500 minutes, or something like that. |
