This is becoming a trend

Large cable companies trying to lower their losses are trying to sell their badly clustered cable districts. 2 years ago, they would do swaps with other large cable companies. Now valuations are in the pits and there are no takers. This is like selling out to asset manager. They are getting very little for their customers in these deals. They only got $1656/customer. Does anybody remember what AT&T paid for MediaOne??? $8000/customer, at the peak of the go-go days.
Time Warner is going to do the same thing with us. Sell to a local cable holdings company. IMHO, this counters good news for cable stocks that was on all of the other Reuters news for the cable stocks yesterday.

Then they raise their rates "due to an increase in expenses..."

Re: Me! Me!

Hope they bring a second cable alternative here, my comcast is great just nice to have a second option like Earthlink cable 42.95 2000/384 my comcast 42.95 1500/256. I would only switch if the upload was higher and the price was below 60$
I did finally get a sbc r/t put in 1,480 ft from me .I actually ordered sbc dsl 1500/256 59$. Last month the same week the raised comcast's upload to 256, alotta people i know dont get consistant speeds like i do 1400-1700/249,I had a slowdown here in sept from 1200-1400 to 300-500 in 1 day complained n complaimed it was fixed and speeds and pings better than ever,My node got overloaded they "split" it sept wow lotta bandwith!
I would love to have 384 upload or even higher that I doubt will happen 2 megs down would be nice also but im almost getting it .

Re: Me! Me!

So you know, EarthLink cable is typically limited to the host MSO's basic speed.

Nope I didn't know,that blows.Makes sense though.
Actually since PRO is 3.5/384 seems like EL 2000/384 will be an option.

Re: Me! Me!

a) Pro isn't the standard speed in your area
b) Don't expect to see EarthLink over Comcast in your area any time soon

Re: Me! Me!

I know Pro isnt the standard speed but if another cable co. gets access to the lines the bandwith is there and they can charge as they want. Like you said im sure not holding my breath, but I do think we will have A cable alternative by late 04 early 05 whether I would switch from comcast like I said would only be if it were A higher speed atleast the upload with the same or better pings, line qual I get with comcast. I love my comcast 1.5/256 had a little problem that was fixed promptly in Sept. only issue i'd had since the transition I would just like them not to be a monopoly here in Ypsilanti/AnnArbor area. I finally have A dsl alternative YEAH ,only if comcast's service goes to crap though nice to finally have atleast 1 alternative here!
Wish I had the wow/comcast choice like you do, my sister lives in Bellville well her addy is Bellville in Wayne co. I dont even think Bellville is green on the website for wow avail, she had comcast first now her comcast service wasn't up to par 800-1100/98-115 but her wow is great 1400-1500 very consistant upload of 294.She runs Windows ME uhg thats another story yuck

Go deal all around

Comcast gets smaller, localities get more localized service. Too bad they don't do it more.

bresnan vs comcast

Is bresnan actually better though? It would appear that I'll be one of those sold to bresnan. But perhaps bresnan has caps worse then the 1G comcast news server thing. I couldn't find anything about their actual service and what packages/prices bresnan offers. Has anyone got a link for this?

Re: bresnan vs comcast

I too am worried about going to bresnan. I love my connection now, and I dont think going to a smaller cable company will make it any better. Less buying power/customers...

Re: bresnan vs comcast

If you live in a poorly clustered area meaning that Comcast only has a few towns in the region that their local offices are managing, then most of your money is going elsewhere anyways. Any improvements or new products that Comcast will come up with will go to you last and you won't get any benefits of the large company. At least this way, all the profits will go toward your cable system not other cities. It's not a tremendous benefit, but a minor one.

The purchase involves 197 communities including systems serving: Billings, Bozeman, Helena, Great Falls, Kalispell and Missoula, Montana; Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie and Jackson, Wyoming; and Grand Junction, Canon City and Durango, Colorado. Bresnan plans to upgrade the systems and launch advanced services through a substantial capital investment plan.
While the list is incomplete, I would expect SLC to be on the list if it were effected. In addition, other articles suggest these areas have not been ungraded for advanced services (such as internet), so it may be a while before anyone knows what Bresnan might offer.

Salt Lake is an important cluster to Comcast. The Utah systems were systems owned by TCI , but managed by others, and never branded AT&T Broadband. They are Vernal, Cedar City, and Delta.
That deal has been in the works for over a year

Re: Salt Lake City- not included

Are you fairly sure that the UT section doesn't include Salt Lake then? On the bresnan site it mentioned Utah in their press release, but I have no idea which cities.

If it doesn't include SL, then I would likely be stuck with comcast and their 1G news server cap. Granted I don't like this, I also don't know if the bresnan folks will be better or worse off.

Cable System "Horse Traders"?

This group has a very strange history, not terrible, but they do like to move the properties around.
Does anyone have any experience with them?
Their doesn't seem to be poop about their current operations on their home page.

Better read it closley

Comcast just sold off some of their systems in the west? Wait a minute. Didn't Comcast just buy those systems from AT&T during the big merger/buyout?

It seems that after evaluation Comcast has decided that those systems needed drastic upgrades and rather than poor more money they don't have into those upgrades, they decided to dump them off to someone else. Bresnan.

Oh by the way since I no longer work at AT&T as a cable modem installer/contractor, I will be changing my user name.

Re: Better read it closley

Well of sorts yes, Comcast was interested in the LARGE markets which only needed minor upgrades to offer Internet, VoIP, Digital cable, VOD

The areas comcast sold are RURAL areas that don't yet have any sort of advanced infrastructure in place and it will cost ALOT to rebuild them

Bresnan has been working on acquiring these systems since long before the Comcast merger.

Comcast's business model is to always make 15-30% profit. If they can't see a profit coming out of these areas, then they dump them. I still work for at&tbb (comcast) and I am very impressed with them so far. They have a 'no nonsense' way of doing business. You either contribute to making a profit, or your gone. It's about time someone runs this like a business. at&t just sat around and spent spent spent and didn't care about the customers. I can't even start to tell you about some of their long term contracts that go back to Media One.

If you read the press release closely, you will find that in addition to the money being paid to Comcast; they will also be getting Bresnan stock as part of the payment. That means that along with several investment companies they will be a part owner of Bresnan! Also as you read the rest of the article you will note that Bresnan will be managing these systems in partnership with Comcast for at least the next 10 years! It appears that Bresnan specializes in "operating non-urban cable systems".

SPENT SPENT????

Natter,

I agree with you about the spending. But just out of curiosity what do YOU think they spent all their money on?
