It's Just A Pipe

When we realize that our public roads are just roads and when we realize that Municipal FTTx is just the fiber, then we can begin to see the benefits. Anyone can deliver lawful commerce over these roads and anyone can travel over them for personal reasons.

The Municipal Data Pipe model needs to provide the place where commercial enterprises can plug-in their services at the 'head-end' and shove it through these MuniPipes© to their subscribers. The MuniPipe© Entity gets paid only for the Common Carriage by the Service Providers. Now we have open competition where any enterprise wanting to deliver video, audio, data, telephony and/or security service is relieved of the expense building and maintaining the infrastructure. Any content or network service provider will be welcome to "Plug-in" on a non-discriminatory basis; and then they can market their service directly to the subscriber in an open and competitive market. You (as the consumer) will be able to pick and choose from these providers.

Chairman Powell's model would require any company wanting to deliver electronic commerce to also develop their own road from their end to the customer's end. This is not economically viable.

Any for-profit usage without written permission or consent or compensation to the owner is in violation of all national and international copyright laws. tomz@rurallink.net for more information or permission to use them.

Re: It's Just A Pipe

I wholeheartedly agree.

It does not make economic sense to build multiple wired Internet "roads" for first mile access. The revenue potential vs cost pretty much precludes more then one player in a given market. The Internet is an equal opportunity carriage mechanism – it is no longer necessary to build a dedicated network for each way information is packaged: TV, radio, telephone etc.

My personal preference is the model you stated. The municipality builds and runs wholesale first-mile infrastructure. Service providers are able to use the network to compete for hearts, minds, and wallets. This limits government control over what is an inherent monopoly service while at the same time encouraging strong competition for service delivery. If municipalities do not step in and build the access network they will need to deal with having a vertically integrated player controlling access to the Internet - able to determine who can and cannot use the network and what type of traffic can and cannot be carried. The Internet is too important to allow a private company to become the gatekeeper – it needs to remain a public commons.

House Bill 298 - VOTE NO!

House Bill 298 - VOTE NO!

Don't shut Pennsylvania out of future opportunities!

Think about our future as a "tech savvy Common Wealth!"

Look who the source is, political types! You think you will win by siding with "them" up front, but guess who VOTES or NOT VOTES you and your "pals" into office!

THE PUBLIC!!!

So please don't short change your Common Wealth of Pennsylvania for the sake of a few bucks! (read into if you like).

Stay true to your constituents... don't we deserve it?

peace.

I wish I could move back

I grew up in Altoona and moved away when I joined the Navy. Since then I have lived 4 other states. Granted this is a small sample of the rest of the country but I feel that out of those four, PA is the best. From what I heard the broadband offerings suck. Sure the roads are bad in some places. (What do you expect with winters like that?) At least one is not sucked dry by taxes (personal property 2 times a year from the state and the city, sales tax on everything including food )that are wasted on road projects like the upgrade to I-64 in Hampton roads, VA (on going for well over 5 years and only covered 10 miles of freeway. PA is not perfect and everybody has different expectations of what there home town / state should be like. But what place is full of perfect people and ideal circumstances. After all, our country is run by politicians. All things considered, I will move back to PA as soon as I can afford it.

My only question is....

...if they pass this bill does this mean they cannot have any of the $20 million the Fed is giving away to wire rural areas?
