Transition fine...email servers SLOW, spam

I didn't have a problem transitioning over on my tower. My laptop is connected by wireless, and it didn't take yesterday, because I like to turn on my wireless connection after bootup if I need it.

Apparently, the transition software looks for the connection as your system loads the software, so if you aren't connected to the internet immedately, you don't get through. So I plugged my laptop directly into my router, rebooted, and viola, the transition wizard took.

When I went to check my mail, the servers were, and still are SLOW. It works, but it takes a good while to get your mail.

Plus, I had a couple of presents in my mailbox when checking it for the first time under Comcast. SPAM. I got two spam emails immediately as a Comcast customer, and a third later on that day, all about the same stupid sales pitch. I've never gotten spam from this given source. I wonder if they planned on the Comcast transition somehow?

 Comcast THIS!

The transition went well, my ass!

AT&T was the most awful service provider...and Comcast has inherited that...and apparently they are proud of it.

I am not, and will never be, a comcast customer.

What, they can't afford to pay $6.95 a year to renew the attbi.com domain at GoDaddy.com???

Earthlink still maintains all the domain names of ISPs it has swallowed.

There is NO excuse a user should be forced to switch email addresses due to a merger. ...and forcing a user to change a user name if his current one is already in use on the new network....well that is customer "service" of the worst kind.

There is simply no reason to keep Comcast. So much for the "we're your new cable company and we're here to do things right" commercials!

...Where is that "holding up middle finger" emoticon when I need it.

I say buy your own domain and pay someone a couple of bucks a month to host your email. The whole thing will cost about $50 a year!

Re: Transition fine...email servers SLOW, spam

My transition was mostly smooth. Couple times when checking mail I got errors (server dropped connection, etc). Now I want to turn off the mail forwarding as soon as I can at the old attbi.com address so I might enjoy a couple days of spam free mail at Comcast. Though, I know it won't last long.

Trasition fine but like others

Email is slow. I've always gotten excellent service with Comcast and I'm sure they're working on the email issue. But in the meantime, it's a bit of a pain. Like others, I wish they would have left well enough alone. I had no problem with ATTBi's mail servers and I also was able to get a Comcast username early (back in February) and never had any problems with Comcast's mail server...until Monday that is.

Re: Comcast THIS!

Maybe they couldn't keep the ATTBi.com domain for legal reasons (part of the spin off agreement) so that AT&T retains it's own identity.

I wonder how much of this is due to...

A friend of mine was switched from attbi to comcast yesterday and had e-mail problems. She figured out that Comcast required authentication on the mail servers and made the appropriate configuration changes.

Partial forward:

I figured it out. In OE, you have to go into
Tool/Accounts/Properties/Servers/ and check "My Server Requires
Authentication" - then click on Settings and tell it to "Use the same
settings as my incoming mail server" and close it. Restart and Bingo!
You're set. This is why xxx and xxxxxxxx cannot get OE to work on send
mail. They need to do exactly this and they will be able to send/receive.

My works, it's just slooooooooow. If I turn on the "My Servers Requires Authentication" it doesn't work at all. In my area anyway, it must be turned off.

This may vary depending on your location. If it stops working altogether, you'll know what to try first .

I agree with you on this... whenever companies merge, customers shouldn't be required to mess around with things like this. It only gives people one more reason to switch ("Hey, I'm losing this email address anyway...").

Although I wasn't an ATTBI customer, I had gone through a few email changes and finally decided to solve the problem myself by buying my own domain ($6.95/year with GoDaddy) and hosting ($95 or so a year through smarterlinux.com) and run my own email that way. Of course, this probably isn't going to work for most technologically-challenged broadband customers.

Re: Transition fine...email servers SLOW, spam

Just curious. Was the spam the one to the tune of "FREE PASSWORD" or "FREE ACCOUNT"? This one has been happening forever with Comcast. I am sick of trying to trace the Eurotrash that constantly sends this one to the Comcast domain. But I don't know for sure if that is Comcast's fault.

 Smooth Sailing

Things went smoother for me than I would have imagined. My e-mail address was available. I did a manual configuration, which worked without a hitch. No complaints here. If anything, it was the lack of mail that has prompted me to send test messages to my old address, just to make sure things are being forwarded. I haven't noticed any increase in spam as was reported by some. I didn't get too much of that with attbi anyway. Comcast's site was a bit slow, and I wondered if Comcast had planned properly . . . however, I imagine after the onslaught, things will calm down. I feel for those who have been experiencing problems.

Unbiased article?

No offense to Karl, but this article isn't quite unbiased. Moving 1.9 million people from one email system to another is going to have complications. There is not one blip about someone having no problems moving over. The article pretty much talks about "this person had issues" and "this party had problems".

When I read broadbandreports articles on the front page, there are times when I would like to hear a little unbiased reporting. A "mixed bag" as the title would say does not obviously include the success stories. Only the negative ones.

I had no issues with the email transition. I know 5 other customers in my area who didn't have a problem.

Maybe it depends if you're legacy Comcast or not (I'm not). Isn't the mail server the mail server? Or does mail.comcast.net resolve to different servers depending on the franchise like @Home used to do with "Mail" being the server name.

migration was virtually a non-event for me

I was one of the more outspoken opponents of using the Transition Wizard. Comcast eventually admitted (grudgingly) that its use was optional, that attbi.com email would be forwarded to comcast.net regardless.

Yesterday I spent about 5 minutes manually reconfiguring my Outlook Express mail and news accounts, and my Newsgrabber newsreader. Other than the mail server's honeymoon jitters, I've had no issues.

I have my mail hosted through Digitronic and it was pretty simple.

Re: Unbiased article?

In my defense right at the beginning it notes that how the migration went depends on who you ask.

Nowhere does it say it's the vast majority of customers that had problems. It says SOME customers had problems. Customers who didn't have problems aren't reported for the same reason your local news doesn't report on the fact that BOB made it to work today without smashing into anything.

If readers read the linked articles and discussions, they're more than capable of seeing that overall the migration has been smooth....but that support was overloaded.....probably, yes, by a lot of people who didn't follow instructions.

That's a good point. I would like to know the percentage of people that experienced problems. It obviously could have been much worse. Also those of us who work in areas of customer support, know how things go. Some problems can be blamed on the technicians, but quite often, problems are the fault of the customer. Having said that, for those who used the transition wizard, one would think that (except for cases where the e-mail name was not available, or duplicated), the process would go without a hitch though I'm sure that's not the case.

I don't remember off the top of my head what it was, as I don't normally sit there and read through them, but I do know it wasn't a free password or free account series of emails.
