I'm seeing it first hand

On the way home I saw black smoke coming from Staten Island, NY (ConEd) and Linden, NJ (PSE&G). As it turns out, both power plants are on fire. Ironically I saw the smoke as I drove past the Sewaren, NJ (PSE&G) plant which is about a mile from my house. The SI and Linden plants are both about 7 miles from my house. We've been getting all kinds of brownouts every few minutes or so.

I heard on the radio that EWR, LGA and JFK airports were closed. I looked in the sky by my house (right under the EWR flight path) and the plans were flying like there's nothing wrong. I later learned that the 3 airports are open and running on backup power.

Makes me glad that my flight out of Newark isn't until next week!

Re: I'm seeing it first hand

No, the plants are not on fire. The Niagara power grid tripped off for some reason and that prompted power cascade. When that happens, the Con Ed plants trip off. The breakers have not been used in a long time and any debris or whatever would probably catch fire from the arc when they trip. The stacks exhaust the flame and smoke.

IIRC, the Niagara system was the same one that was responsible for the outage in 1965 when a relay tripped out. It was supposed to have been reset in 1963 to accept a higher current level but never was adjusted.

Kinda funny if you see smoke and the 'news' says there is no fire....

They showed a helo shot of a plant in NY/NJ area with flames shooting out of the stacks and huge black clouds of billowing smoke. Still doesn't mean there ISN'T a fire a guess.

What is your source for this? Niagara Mohawk is saying that they don't know what the cause is, so is NYSEG.

Some lady called in a local TV station said she heard noises coming from a NM plant and now I'm hearing all sorts of strange things like one radio caller claiming there was an explosion there.

The only NM problem I know of is that some stations along the grid are shutting down which results in blackouts here.

I still have power (obviously) in North-West Cheektowaga.

Btw, someone as I write this says the source may be in Ottawa. Who knows.

The source is CNN and the New York city government. The New York mayor just explained all this on CNN just now.

This is funny too because I remember watching a series on TLC (I think) a few months ago that was about the 1965 outage.

I remember a spokes person from ConEd said that it was something that will never happen again...

Amazing on how insecure our power grid really is.

Pretty Good...Niagara did trip and caused a cascade. But if you all are curious why it cascades:

They have switches that act as flow meters (if you will). If so-and-so plant is selling, say, 25MW then the switch station limits a one-way out put with a peak of 25MW and so on. Now let's say the one selling the 25MW of power goes down...now the smaller hubs start feeding in that direction. The "flow meters" don't like this cause they see xMW going the wrong direction and don't allow power to that grid. =black out.

The brown outs are all these plants switching, comming on, synching, paralleling, and all that good stuff.

Smoke CAN be normal on fast shut downs, and fire is also possible. But I can only assume from where I'm sitting that the smoke is from the hard shut down.

Hopefully this hits everyone's curiosity:)

Have power here in Maine

Kind of surprising, considering how unreliable CMP has been in the past. Had a 15 hour outage a few weeks ago, and it seems not a week goes by where it doesn't blink out. I guess we're on a separate grid than the rest of the northeast, because there hasn't been any problems with the power here all day.

About 10 related stories here

»www.iggyz.com/ I've added about 20 related stories to my news page just now. CNN just reported authorities are looking into if the lovesan aka msblaster worm may be the source of the problem. It was stated that the Niagara Mohawk power grid may have used Microsoft software. At the moment the news sources and government agencies are stating this isn't related to a terrorist attack. But they are still investigating.

That would definitely explain the 'rolling' aspect of the outage. If true, I expect Niagara Mohawk will have a few IT openings soon.

CNN stated about an hour ago that sources don't think the worm was the cause. I'm sure it'll take a bit to investigate before the true cause is known.

Well, you might be right... Then again, you probably aren't right.

Here is why. Suppose you are a community college in Virginia and you have 300 Microsux PC's on your only connection to the Internet. On that connection there are mission critical data streams (tele-video classes) and non-mission critical data streams (the kids in the library)...

Suppose the above...

NOW SUPPOSE that 250 of 300 of those PC systems gets this wrom in the period of say 20 minutes... and suppose that everyone of those PCs goes out on your connection to the Internet in search of a new victim... suppose that they are all scanning with their 100 MBit cards thru your 45 MBit gateway to find a new victim...

GUESS WHAT??? Your 45 MBit gateway router is NOW TOTALLY SWAMPED.... It is now trying to move 2 GBits of traffic thru a 0.045 GBit pipe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is pretty much what we call ugly, in the networking industry...

Ok... Now let us suppose you are a power plant with a 45 MBit connection to the Internet and the router you are using also has a 1 GBit connection to a PRIVATE NETWORK over which you are moving mission critical information...

Suppose those 200 PCs just got that worm and are now scanning the Internet for new victims... GUESS WHAT????????????? Your Cisco is overloaded... It can't process the traffic fast enough and you STILL HAVE LATENCY EVEN THOUGH YOUR GBit private network is not overloaded.......................................................

So yes, it could be the worm... and yes, I'll take that bet.

Damn PBL

I knew that Powerline over Broadband testing was a mistake, oh wait, I forgot, it's offline too, and not interfering with anything, even hamms. Hey Hammers hurry up and fire up your walkie-talkies and get those people off the streets, Bring The temp. down, and get those subways and busses up and running, and get those power grids back online. My UPS has only got about 33 minutes left.

Right now all of Niagara does, but only have of the region managed to stay online. I've posted it a few times before, but what happened was a tech at Sir Adam Beck Generating Station in Niagara Falls saw the cascade failure ocurring and managed to pull Niagara Falls and portions of other cities (about a quarter of St. Catharines, half of Welland, most of Fort Erie and Niagara-on-the-Lake) off the main North American grid and instead act as a little 'Power Island' while everywhere else went dark. The American side of the Niagara River remained dark while everything from St. Catharines westward was dark too.

Virus?

CNN just reported that the Feds think it may have been a result of the recent virus going around...

I am scared to think that the power grid is supported by Microsoft...I would have hoped that it would be some private OS.

Where's the President?

Heading to a $1,000 a plate fund raiser. 'Might' address the country at 9:30.

Where's the Vice President? Vacationing in Wyoming. No plans to return.

Not to be overly critical, but I'm thinking vaguely pretending someone has a handle on things while tens of millions of people go through a crisis MIGHT be a good idea.

Fragile communications infrastructure

With power out in many areas our fragile communications infrastructure is brought to its knees. The only service that can provide communications both locally and over long distance is the Amateur Radio Service (Hams). Every year 35,000 people set up amateur stations under emergency conditions and operate them for 24 hours. Not only are these people experienced operators, if their equipment breaks they can repair it on the spot and adapt to different conditions.

The power companies want to take the spectrum allocated to the amateur service and operate a legacy broken technology when there are many better and faster alternatives.
