Not so my friend, the lowest ranking enlisted man in the Navy is the Midshipman. I know this is not officially an enlisted rank, but they are not yet commissioned and when they come aboard for training, not even SR's give them any respect!

As they should, when the 18 year old punk is just weeks away from ordering around a bunch of enlisted men who have been there for years.

MAN, We need to act QUICK!!

I tell ya, we(The US) need to "Hire" the Elite Hackers, and start learning from them on HOW to protect ourselves..

I will tell you ONE THING:

This is just the beginning. It's ONLY going to get worse!!

EDIT: Just think on WHAT has actually changed within the past few years.. The "Zombie" PC's were on Dial-Up(Don't know the %, but some were). NOW, the General public is getting on Broadband, thus Fatter Pipes, which *Could* speed up attacks towards whatever they want. WE(US Again) need to get on the bandwagon, and start educating people in how to secure their PC's!!

And btw: On the DDoS topic. You haven't heard of history-based ip filtering by any chance you yet huh?

old news....

the navy was always getting themselves hacked for years. (i used to visit 2600 and watch the roll call of hacked sites for instance, navy was there every other listing) doesnt surprise me that they STILL havent put security as a priority.

I Agree!

Seems like everyday the Navy or US government is getting hacked everyday doesnt it? The Navy needs to really follow the bandwagon otherwise its just going to get worse. Maybe they could use a few lessons.. Security needs to improve..

ive been running IIS for years, and never had a problem.
If you are competent, IIS can be a good solution.
Remember people, we are dealing with morons, who even after 50000 warnings, still do not bother to patch their boxes, and management etc not willing to devote the extra money for the those responsible to patch them.

I am reminded of the automobile seatbelt interlocks on cars in the mid 70's.
The car would not start unless you had your seatbelt fastened. Me wonders how many lives would have been saved had that system not been nulled by the courts. I know of one 16 year old girl who would be alive today.

My point?
You are the exception Detth. More and more we are learning what a weapon a compromised computer with a broadband connection can become.
As evidenced my this latest attack, there are far too many admins/users who won't take the simple steps to secure their systems for their own and everyone else's good.

I hate to think that M$ would have to take control of our systems to insure that all the patches are in place, but it's getting to be a very nasty world out there in cyber-space.

It's too bad that we have to put a gun to the head of (L)users to force them to protect themselves, but it's becoming evident that it may be the only solution.

Well if companies in general would stop sending all the IT jobs to India, maybe someone in IT would care. As it stands now, a degree in Computer Science is great if you like to travel, TO INDIA!!

Re: my only comment

Wouldn't it take about 200 years to pay off a student loan on India's wages?

The cost of going to IIT is less that what you would make flipping burgers. And where the top 10% of students here can get into Ivy league, there it's the top 2%.

Edit: Not to mention that that Computer Science degree would be a joke at IIT.

**SMACKS** Whatcha thinking?! Go ahead and go back to Dial-Up, and tell us how it is. I'll keep my broadband, thank you.

I keep my PC up to date with all of the patches twice a week, and running a router. I feel safe here, cause I check my email through the web-interface. I don't have Outlook Express, or Outlook configured.. And, I don't open up Attachments, UNLESS I know it's legit! This has kept me safe from Trojans, Virii, etc for over 10 years.

BACK IN DA DAY

Before my ISP disabled netbios I used to scan army net ranges w/ xSharez and I found a ton of pc's that had win95/98 w/ no PW or weren't patched so I could run the pw Brute Force and gain full access.. lol

I still remember I got onto one Navy PC w/ User names/Passwords conbo's to safes and a ton of other crap..

Of course I downloaded the files but I never had the guts to mess w/ the info I had..

Lucky for them I was looking for pr0n, warez and stuff to download and not passwords or secure info..

Also I think the guy that used the PC was a comander or "manager" because he had a ton of reports on transfers n' stuff of subordinats..

This was over 1yr 1/2 ago so I'm sure they fixed the prob..

Just goes to show goobers w/ pc's and broadband = security risk when they have axs to important info...

I'm sure if you scanned the RIAA ip range w/ xSharez you could probably find a ton of PC's w/ little to basic security and see what they have on their whole HDD..

U dont have to use it on the net

all u have to do is give your credit card info to any business who has internet access and hackers can hack them as well most offices have acess to the internet so your credit or plastic moola isnt safe anywhere really you just hope who you are doing buisness with has a secure network

There are lots of ways to abuse someone else's credit card that have nothing at all to do with the internet.

There are easier ways for even a simple-minded cashier to memorize your card (see skimmer.) That's why you never hand anyone your card, even in restaurants.

Too scared to use credit on the net? Nope.

Just get one of those one time only cards that you can use for one transaction. That way if someone does get it they can't access your money because it's all used up.

Re: Too scared to use credit on the net? Nope.

Some credit card providers will give out temporary numbers for use on the Internet. They will allocate as much money as you request them to allocate, and then will push all that money into the newly created 'one-time use account'. So your real account is protected (what about cracking the bank's db?), and whoever hijacks the fake number..well..they get a fake number

Well, I read this report yesterday morning.

To clear up a thing or two: Old hackers are used by the US government, when a cracker takes on the US Government they are actually taking on the 'Team'. Will the cracker get caught ~Of course he will, will this be advertised -No.

For a short brief for those that think the US.gov is without some smarts, check put the 'FUN' thing the Army put out; a lot of plle had fun with it...and that, friends, was just a game!

.gov employees thousands of programmers et al and yes, sometimes something happens and although, as yet it's not a notable Service ~You can bet this branch will get known in the years to follow.

I wish the damn media would, along with supposed 'smart' users, could tell the difference between a hacker & a cracker. The two are opposite in the concept of what they do, as an end result!

Cheers

iCould this be Al Qaeda?

I was just thinking of a news story that I've seen a couple of months ago about the military, or CIA finding some computers, or laptops out in Al Qaeda camps, and another story that was on the drudge report about Al Qaeda claiming responsibility for the blackout this has got me thinking that we as the united states may be possible under cyber attack from Al Qaeda, and September is getting close too many things are looking too suspicious at this time hopefully, a month from now we won't be at war again.

Al Qaeda still thinks that "open window" means a hole in the cave wall, not a window on the pc.
