Just helping out

I've never heard of some fo the teams listed above before. However, I can say I'm a proud member of the Team Discovery project to help find a cure for nearly 1 1/2 years now.

Unused CPU

I have participated in a couple. Most of the programs have a setting where the priority of the project can be set, with the default to be the least important. This means that anytime a demand is placed on the computer's CPU, the project lets anything and everything go to the processor first. There is no change in computer speed for anything a person wants to do. However when something like getting to a web page that you want to read happens (like this one right now) then the program again begins to utilize your computers CPU, as you read. Painless, non-intrusive, and a nice thing to be involved in.
I'm currently on team Starfire (SETI) which has moved to 6th place on the world club list.

Re: Just helping out

I actually have an old pentium 200 that is dedicated to just running SETI@home. No keyboard and no monitor (KVM switch), just a box running the software.

Pretty slow though. I thought that since it would be running 24/7 it would crunch better, but its real slow.

Ditto, nice article Capt, glad you're feeling better too.

One thing though to all. Make sure if doing anything with any other Computer or Computers other than your own that you get Permission in Writing.

Nope, please don't feel slighted because that is not the case at all. The SETI team was asked to participate, and volunteers were solicited here »Is anyone thinking of this post? but nobody responded in time. It is a great opportunity to promote the various team efforts here and none of those efforts should be considered useless.

Also, another goal of United Devices.....

....besides cancer is searching for a cure for smallpox. I think this is an extremely important use of resources (while many others do not share this opinion). If smallpox was re-introduced to our now largely uninoculated world, the devastation would dwarf anything that cancer does. That's why I crunch on smallpox.

Where are they?

For those of you who don't know, I've been maintaining a team map for those who run one or more DC projects: »home.comcast.net/~seaquake4/map.html

There are about 500 people listed there, though there are many more involved with the various clubs.

Worthwhile efforts

Of all the things BBR has done, with the forums & interesting subjects and discussions offered, IMHO, the DCC projects are THE most valuable..
They offer folks the opportunity to actually do something, and "be a part" of something that can reward humanity with tangible results!! Hopefully, in the near future..
A BIG "thumbs up" to BBR, and the DCC projects and participants who un-selfishly contribute to them!!

A shameless "plug" for TEAM HELIX now.
Drop by the forum, and look 'round. This place is "the best kept secret" in BBR!! You will find some of the most friendly, and helpful folks in BBR here,(not to mention, we have LOTS of fun!!)

Re: Worthwhile efforts

A hearty second for what rusdi said and a big thanks to the Cap'n for the well written article.

If your computer is connected to the internet anyway, why not let it do good for generations to come? I have two Folding@Home clients running on each of nine computers now. A client just runs in the background politely using only spare cycles.

There is nothing I can do now to save my mother who lost her battle with ovarian cancer in 1992, two dear friends whose lives ended quite young because of that dreadful disease, or an uncle lost to Alzheimer's. I crunch in the hope answers will be found in time for my beloved sister-in-law just diagnosed with Leukemia and my diabetic daughter, for so many suffering now, for the generations to come. I can't imagine wasting those CPU cycles when they have the potential to do so much good.

I hope everyone reading this will take the time to browse the DC forums here and consider joining our efforts.

BBR RC5 Project team now 18th in the world!!

As of last night, we jumped a spot.
By the time the contest is over...BBR could potentially make it to 14th or 15th in the world. Not too shabby.

Make Your Time Online Count!

All those wasted years surfing the net....

I am a proud member now of Team Discovery...using all those unused cycles crunchin' for cures. Project Hope is our newest and brightest endeavor...fueled by our desire to attain that goal much quicker and more probably.

Aside from all that, the forums any of our dedicated teams frequent are in my estimation the most personable, friendly and extended family one could ever hope to have.

Much more worthwhile time spent online IMO.

Hardly any. Typically, these projects download their work within a few seconds, and upload the results at the same speed, and these transfers take place at varying frequencies, depending on the project. Most are also capable of deferred transfers, for those who don't have full time connections.

All the projects have FAQs which will tell you more about this. Or just ask in any of the Team Forums.

Good to See This!!!!!!!!

Hi,
It is soooo good to see the DC Projects getting front page exposure here on BBR. I am another proud member of Team Discovery. I am also the treasurer for Project Hope!

It is sooo easy to run any of the DC Projects. Since I am a proud member of Team Discovery, I run both UD and TSC.

Please join one of the DC Projects! You will make a lot of great friends.

Another one here for Team Discovery.

Oh, oh, oh! You forgot to mention the coolest part of the whole thing.

You get a nice little spinner if you join one of the projects.

IMHO the Team Discovery one is the coolest.

Currently, I've got a few computers dedicated to the United Devices cause.

In all seriousness, the main reason, though is the fact that my maternal grandmother fought colon cancer that spread throughout her body for 13 years, my maternal grandfather died of liver cancer, my paternal grandfather died of prostate cancer, and my mother has already had to have a partial hysterectomy and patial removal of her thyroid. This is a disease that really hits close to home for me.

does the program work only on windows?

I have an older mac, that is up and running, I just use it as a file server, if their is a mac program that can run to join any of these, I would be interested.

Suggest people have a look at SETI, the oldest and biggest DC project.

BBR is 6th in the world (teams) with over 6000 years of CPU time. We also have a very lively, friendly and active forum.

Would it be a bad idea to run dc on my server?

I'm running debian server on a p3 coppermine. But nobody knows about it, so it usualy utilizes less than 1% of the cpu.

But would a distributed computing slow it down or freeze it?

No, DC will have no impact on your computer at all. DC programs only use UNUSED cycles. I run multiple applications along with one DC program with NO problems.

I have a Debian/GNU system with less than 1% utilization. Seems reasonable to run the processor the other 99% of the time on a DC project. When I do a "make" on some software I'm developing, it runs as quick as before I loaded the RC5-72 project.

Help Make a Difference

Its good to see so many familiar names and friends from various Distributed Computing teams post to this thread.

Keys Capt, you did an excellent job of explaining the purpose of each of the projects and their current status.

To anyone who reads this and is not affiliated with any team ... you can make a difference by turning your unused CPU capability into something really worthwhile, and I urge you to give one of these projects a try.
