Comments on news posted 2003-09-05 09:54:13: A considerable cross section of our members here at DSLR have chosen to participate in something known as "Distributed Computing"; to that end we've assembled a primer on how to put your spare computer cycles to use. ..

Team Discovery is a great place!

I have been crunching for A cure for over a year this is the most fulfilling way I have found to give back to my fellow humans.

Just think someone has to eventually find a cure for these terrible diseases.

Thanks to KeysCapt See Profileand all the folks contributing to this report. You Rock!

I am a proud member of Team ECO-LifeMapper.

I used to run SETI a few years ago so it's great to be contributing again.

I chose this project because if you don't know what you got, how do you know what you are losing.

The real grabber is that this encyclopedia will not only marry the data from different sources, it also makes predictive models of each species range.

And I don't do nothin' but leave my computer on.

How easy is that!

Re: Would Love to help ALS

If you are interested in a projectthat can someday lead to a cure for ALS, I suggest the Folding@Home [FAH] Project.

»siliconvalley.internet.com/news/···1_905611

The proteins that are being studied are not only specific to Alzheimer's, but also type II diabetes and Mad Cow. This research will help understand other amyloidogenic diseases as well, such as Parkinson's disease and ALS. When researchers begin to understand why some proteins misfold, it will relate to why other proteins misfold.

You can check out the DSLR FAH team here at:

Jordan Blocks VoIP Calls at L7

Jordan Telecom has upgraded its co-location network and started using Cisco 6500 multi-layer switches with content filtering modules and L7 application filtering. They started blocking all VoIP calls. This includes Net2Phone, Vonage, Dialpad, and even yahoo messenger voice...

All the ports used by VoIP traffic for signaling, setting the call, and running the call are open. Non is blocked. The blockage happens at layer 7 by inspecting each packet and applying the blockage policies on them.

During my search I found what is called Internet Telephony Proxy like:

»somebody.net/membership-types.html

I do not know if these proxies work, and if they do, I am wondering if we can find free Internet Telephony proxies. Also, how can we make them work with units like the Cisco ATA 186, and IP phones?

Any suggestions to overcome this problem. I think establishing VPN tunnels with the VoIP providers is a solution. But I am looking for simpler solutions that work with any VoIP providers.

Hey Fellow crunchers, I have been a long time Seti cruncher, but recently started dabbling in Boinc(Astropulse Beta). Is there a team setup for Boinc?

Questions

Hi. I would be very interested in joining Team Discovery. However I am not ver computer literate and don't really understand what all is involved.
What do I have to do? What do I have to know? Do I have to be a computer guru to join and help? I tried reading the FAQ's but just got more confused when I read about the program you have to download and what it does.
Please forgive me if this is in the wrong place...

too bad these apps arent multithreaded.

I have a P4 2.4 with HT, and I increased the priority of the task to high, but it still only uses one cpu. This computer sits all day doing nothing! Lazy computer...

Clubs?

1st off, I'm new to DSL reports.com so when I stumbled upon the clubs section I was pretty amazed! In plain english, what are these clubs about? It looks like anyone can join and that it uses your computer's idle process?!? Is that true?
I don't mean to flame but overall what is the benefit by joining one of these clubs?

Low CPU Usage Client

Anyone know of a client that would not use 100% of my CPU or not? I know I can set it to IDLE so it doesn't interfere with my daily work, but I don't want my temps to get up to high. I hear it isn't too good for your system. So PM me or post pack here if you know of any client that uses less than 100% cpu(maybe 50% or something on IDLE of coarse), while still utilizing it for finding proteins or w/e.

One computer can add to the total!

People have different reasons for picking a project and joining a team. Some very compelling and personal, some just because they can contribute to the whole by doing nothing but using their spare computer time to help. I'm a member of Team Helix and run Folding at Home on my wireless laptop. I also have a few CPU intense graphic programs that I use, and the project has never caused any problems. I guess what I'm trying to say is, after reading about all these great projects on site, there's really no negative to joining and a lot of positive!:D

Check out those hours. Granted it's spread over 3 years, 3CPUs, and 2 motherboards but hey..... Seriously though to anyone with concerns about these things, I think with my 7000 contributed hours I'm qualified to say "no worries"
