I wish it would stop this...

This last visit to here, I accidentally type [a bad-website, variation on dslreports] as the URL and ended up someplace totally wrong.

I hate it when companies and people take advantage of mistyped URLs, which in some cases will hijack your browser.

Crappy..but.

It was only a matter of time. Put that much power in the hands of a private organization, and sooner or later they will use it to their advantage, regardless of the problems it causes for the real world.

Re: Network Solutions Does it again

It took me 5 months to resolve a fraudalent billing charge from Network Solutions, a Verisign company. I would NEVER NEVER NEVER do business with them again. I canceled a domain with them in May and transfered it to GoDaddy, they still persisted to bill me, even after my exact words were "cancel my entire account".

I agree, but I guess it's better than being redirected to a site with endless popups or porn. If there is even a good way to look at it.

This is the largest cybersquating case in history!

This has just got to be illegal!!!!
I myself use wildcards for secret sections of my websites.
My server looks at the header and fwds it to the proper page. (Not wanting to have that zone published for the world to see)

Verisign is scum, scum, scum, scum!!!!!!!!!!!

The are the same folks who want to sell domain names lottery style and keep all the cash.

I'll be sending several emails to these folks, along with a few calls. They are going to have to call PacBell to block my # I am going to be on them so much!
This is just UNREAL!!

This is the largest cybersquating case in history!

Anyone who has their domains parked at verisign I urge you to transfer them elsewhere.

Hackers, get the drones ready for one heck of a dos attack!

Hummm, better yet, a chainsaw to verisigns trunk lines might give them a better clue!

if my memory serves me correctly

Wasn't versign busted for sending out misleading letters to domain owners that their domains were going to expire, and that they should renew through verisign.. this is bullcrap people...

Any company that conducts business like this should be bombed, burned to the grounded, and sued for being a a dirty company.

Yea, the word "cancel" to most companies means about the same as the words "free" and "unlimited."

Email sent...

Not that they'll ever see it (I imagine their mail boxes are full, already), but sent a complaint email to Verisign. Gotta go file a complaint with ICANN, next.

For what it's worth, you can complain to ICANN about Verisign at this page.

Can I sue?

Anyone know a good lawyer? Couldn't I sue since www.(myname).com now resolves to something without my permission (just like Madonna and corporations)? Or because mispellings of my domain name go elsewhere (haven't courts found that this is illegal in some cases)? Has anyone heard of anyone actually trying to stop VeriSign rather than just complaining about it?

Yes. I was one of those people. I was quite amused that their "special" price was more than the price of the other registrar (DirectNIC) I had gone with.

What the...

What happens when you are changing DNS servers for your domain? It will redirect to VeriSign's site index page. People will think that your site has shut down or was sold.

I'm sure VeriSign can make a pretty penny if they decided to put up ads.

 So Verisign owns the Internet

If Verisign owns the root DNS servers, they pretty much own the Internet. So, instead of the DNS servers being part of an independant worldwide infrastructure, they are simply a greedy company "letting us use" their servers. And since they are their servers, they can do what ever they want to do no matter what anyone says.

Boy. This world, this world.

I'm a n00b but

How are they (verisign) able to handle all of these errant requests? Wouldn't it be like an ultra-massive DoS attack?
