Good to know...

Well I guess I'll have to carry a laptop around just in case I need to call for help in a low-cell coverage area.

That gives Verizon at least SOME competitive edge against the Cable guys...
They needed something.

Or in the case of the telcos, bad things aren't free either

I think that is the case with most companies, telco, power or otherwise.

I'm seeing it right now, Bucs@Falcons in HDTV, typing away on a 54g equipped laptop between plays. Life is good.

Payphones and antiques

Well we all know that payphones are a very old technology and the Bells are starting to take out the payphones because everyone now has a cell phone so why use a payphone? Wi-Fi sounds like a good idea though. Most of those payphones are like antiques and nice for decorations.

You see, there are the people that arn't old enough to pay the cell phone bill (me) and can't afford a cell phone (me) and find it easier to take a quarter around with you then a cell phone (me) and need cheap phones without contrats to even think about getting a phone (me).

Now I have to admit yesterday i fell in to the trap and picked up a Cell Phone (however with no contract and at $50)

How about blackout......

There was a lot of discussion about VoIP and its inability to work during crisis. Verizon and other Telco aim for VoIP-enabled phones. That way, You will be able to make a phone-booth call almost anywhere and access data services.

Re: Cool

It's pretty silly to believe that the telcos can blanket the country in WiFi (sure, hype being fueled by the Bells) when we can't even get full digital cell phone coverage...

It's also pretty silly to believe that you would need 100% coverage to be successful. You digital cell example is a good one. You certainly can't argue the popularity of mobile phones, despite their lack of 100% nationwide coverage.
