Doesn't Look Good

If all they initially plan to offer is NBC and MSNBC Content, they're going to have a real hard time gaining any share of this market. Besides, who wants to watch news feeds online (even pay for it) when I can just watch TV or read the news on wealth of sites. Plus, you have ISPs like Comcast with their "invisible" limits, which will have people nervous about streaming anything for more than 5 minutes a day.

Might work if they keep it free

There are a lot of people that work in offices, etc. that don't have access to TVs.

Re: Doesn't Look Good

I do not like streaming stuff. If I want to watch something, I watch TV. I cannot stand registration.

I hate real networks, I hate their player, I only use it to watch south park episodes.

I know they are trying to find a killer app for broadband, but steaming news isn't it.

Also, I am pretty sure quality will be sub-par.

Gosh...

Does this just work over some MSN Broadband network, or the Internet in general?

In any case I'm sure its use violates our "acceptable use" policy at work: bandwidth issues.

I don't believe you'll be seeing that, if they use Microsofts Media 9 Player as the streaming software, like they already do at their NBC/MSNBC websites, you'll see buffering for a few seconds, but then after that, great quality streaming. Media Player 9 has better streaming quality then any other player. Your "Buffering 1%.............................................." is characteristic of Real Player and sometimes Quicktime.

More commercials

I hate commercials, save that crap for billboards & newspapers & magazines, which I can opt not to look at or subscribe to. I'm tired of all the control that commercials have on our daily lives.

Did you know that our TV shows could have more content time if it wasn't for commercials. You thought that 32 minutes of your "hour long" show was good, Imagine if they could actually give you 45 or 55 minutes of content instead?

To HELL with commercials. I don't watch TV anymore because of that. I play videogames instead. If a videogame has a commercial at it's opening screen other than for that game or it's sequel, it's history, I don't even consider playing it anymore. If a website has one of those damn annoying ads that blocks your read 10 seconds into it, I stop using that page for good and find a new news source.

I don't have to put up with that shtick, and neither do you.

My 2 cents, is actually worth 10!

You hate commercials? ...you wouldn't feel this way if you had to pay $74 for "regular" TV channels just like you pay for the premium networks.

I know we all want everything for free, but believe it or not, we are a market economy and these companies gotta make money. I for one would rather have them make that money from advertisers than off ME.

Exactly right. Is is that hard to just watch a few commercials? or would you rather pay 50 dollars more a month for your cable/dish?`I for sure rather watch the commercials...They aren't that bad for the most part.

So i guess we have to put up with that "shtick", and you should too.

What about networks like ESPN, Fox News, MTV, Spike TV, the list goes on and on...I pay for those channels, but I'm still subjected to commercials out that a$$. If they did offer versions without commercials.

You are paying for distribution...your cable company's lines, offices, repair people, call centers, bills and postage etc.

Exactly...You are not paying for the tv station, you're paying for recieving them. So you only pay the Cable company. The channels themselves have to make money somehow, which is why there are commercials.

edit: and if they had versions of it without commercials, you would be paying a lot to watch them.

Sound Business Model?

quote:
MSN has traditionally been somewhat of a money-pit for Microsoft, and posted a $346 million loss in the first nine months of fiscal 2003.
How many other companies would continue to offer a service if it lost this much money?

I hate registering also - I don't know how many times I have clicked to see something streaming and you either have to register or download some damn player or both.

I can almost guarantee you the quality is poor; but I'll put up with it for free (sorta like those 128K mp3s;) )

What I would like to see.

If they will be streaming NBC shows, I would like to see them offer the primetime lineup. Case in point I got called in to work last night and forgot to set my DVR to record my shows. If there were a way to watch that on the net I'm all for it!
