Comments on news posted 2003-11-09 10:03:33: Remember the spamming router courtesy of Belkin? It seems it's not spam at all! It's a "feature"! As posted on a usenet newsgroup (news.admin.net-abuse.email) by Eric Deming, a Belkin product manager, the explanation is parental controls. ..

From Belkin's website...

"Important message from Belkin:
Belkin is aware of some recent postings that claim that Belkin wireless routers are spamming users during the setup process and periodically thereafter. It is not now, nor has it ever been, the policy of Belkin to intentionally spam our customers or anyone else. Belkin offers a free trial of our parental control feature in our routers, and to make our customers aware of the feature itself and to give them the opportunity to take advantage of the free trial, we have tried to direct users to the information regarding the parental control features. However, since this has become a source of concern to our users, and it is Belkin policy to address the concerns of our users quickly, Belkin has decided to remove this function from the routers. Each router's firmware that incorporates parental control as an option will be changed.

Please expect more detailed information to follow early next week. Thank you."

If this is true, it's terrible! This will cause the early demise of what has become one of my all time favorite threads (rants). I will miss this topic very much.

Soon it'll just be a distant memory that no one can really remember all the details of. And, that's just what those S.O.B.s are waiting/hoping for! Then they quietly introduce the "new and improved model" that does something even worse.

I can hardly wait.

The crucial issue is unauthorized remote control

Most (perhaps all ) posters here have missed the really crucial issue.

That is: Belkin's router can be reconfigured remotely by a random user on your LAN, just by the user visiting a web site.

Worse, the reconfiguration clearly can be done without authentication or authorization.

How long until malicious scripting in spam sends one of your Windows PCs to a cracker site which reconfigures your Belkin router according to the crackers' desires?

For that reason, we'll have no Belkin kit on our networks.

did anyone read the article?

did anyone read the article?

"the user can register or click "No Thanks". Clicking "No Thanks" sets a flag in the Router to stop the Router from re-directing every 8 hours to the reminder page"

to me that means when you click "no thanks" it should stop sending you a message every 8hrs. correct me if i'm wrong but doesn't it. I think it will "spam" you every 8hrs if you just close out the window like every other pop up and the like.
