makes no sense

what's the point for cable companies to raise their upload speeds, when they actually have caps.

what caps

@attbi.com

Re: makes no sense

Can you list one cable company that has caps and tell me what they are please?
Didn't think so !

what about rr extreme?

So in ohio and where ever else that they were trying 3m/512k for twice as much, are they going to get rid of tiered services?

Re: what about RR???????

I have been told here in the Tampa Fl area that TW will not be dishing out 3MB DL speeds, and I am more then certain we will not get this perk as well. Time will tell............

Midco Net is planning increases to

I was on with a tech support guy, and complained to him that they still offer a poor 128k compared to my brother with TWC who get 312k right now. He said they have talked about offering 256k upload and a premium version of 512 for 30 dollars more. Standard service is 30 with your own modem and and 60 for premium, thats pretty hefty!!

@mmi.net

Re: Midco Net is planning increases to

The 256 up will be 32.95 and the midconet max (512 up) will be 49.95. Thats $17 more not $30. The download will remain uncapped. If you think that is hefty check this.

512 down is 69.95.

This sucks.

Why can't others do this? This is great for RR customers.

Pay the price

Sprint already offers 3mb/512k DSL but hell if I am going to pay the price for it. Will just stick with my 1.5/256 DSL for awhile, does enough for me.

3mb/384 = $94.99
3mb/512 = $124.99

These prices are only if you already have Sprint phone service. Hate to see my phone bill if I did get it.

Already have 512 up on Adelphia :)

2003-11-13 03:40:54 EST: 4575 / 485
Your download speed : 4575753 bps, or 4575 kbps.
A 558.5 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 485731 bps, or 485 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier

I'm running along at 4000/512 on Adelphia here in Northern California. I'm on the Powerlink Premier Package, 4000/512, 79 per month, they just started it not too long ago, the standard tier is 3000/256.

i love it

@insightBB.com

Insight always gets forgotten

"smaller providers like Optimum on-line had long been speedier, we know."

Why does everyone always forget about Insight here? There upload speeds have always blown chunks. The current pricing for the 3000/384 package gets you a lot more speed with other broadband providers. But with that said - Insight has been providing 3000 down for over 3 years now. When everyone else was cutting download speeds or keeping levels at 1500 = Insight was at 3000. Ever since they start running the show after the @Home collapse.

Very Nice

Very nice. I use Charter's 2Mb service here and it bounces from 2100-2500Mbps down / 245-310Kbps up and has never gone below those lowest numbers. For me, that is perfectly fine but higher upload is always better. I switched back to Charter from Frontier's 1Mbps/128k service and the higher upstream helped everything.

A long time ago, when Charter first rolled out their cablemodem service in my town (I was playing *Quake*:Team Fortress at the time!), it was an outrageous price, $50, for only 512Kbps cable service but the upstream was 512Kbps too. That rocked; it's too bad they didn't keep it the same upstream rate this whole time . I would like to point out that Frontier Lightninglink has 1.5Mbps Business-class SDSL in Minnesota for $80/mo total. I wouldn't mind 1.5Mbps up and down for only that price! Too bad I am still in college or I would go for it.

By the way, I changed in my info that I use CHarter now...why does it still say Frontier near my name?

i think you need to do a new review of the service to have it appear in your sig...

TW still has a ways to go ..

Time Warner still has a long way to go to catch up
to DSL in terms of speed but their recent upgrades
are at least a step in the right direction.

My SBC DSL is rated at 6 Mbps down and 608 Kbps up
with actual speeds running at 5.5 Mbps down and
541K upstream.

What promotional offer ??

===========================================================
While the cable industry has been stubborn about lowering prices, Comcast's promotional push to offer cable broadband for a yearly introductory rate of $19.95 is at least a start. Unfortunately, it's only available to DSL customers, and after a year it reverts back to $42.95 a month, or $57.95 if you don't subscribe to Comcast cable television.
==========================================================
Does anyone have any details about this ???
Kind regards....

My upstream :)

Man, I must have it good. I use Qwest cable in Omaha, NE and my speed is usually around 2dn/2up. I don't mind not having a 3dn stream since I have a great upstream compared to everyone else it looks like. Its great since I run a server all the time.

My upstream

Have 608k upstream on my DSL now, but I still want more heh. It's passable, but I won't be happy until I can get 1Mbit+. Although after overhead my speed is around 520k.

Bah! This is absurd.

Here's a link to a legacy web site showing kind of service we once were able to get locally. A few lucky bastards still have it:

»www.tcimet.net/

Update: Sadly, the earlier pages don't seem to be linked off the present site anymore, assuming they are still on the server at all. What remains are a few disjointed pages from ca. 2000, after AT&T had taken over the operation. Perusing these you'll see that capping was already in place even in TCI-MET by this time, but what's left does still give some flavor of the "days of yore."

Unfettered access to a 100/100Mbps "backbone" with no restriction on server operation, fixed IPs, and basically a true broadband ISP in every sense of the word. No fluff, no portals, no media empire dreams - just service.

The later residential offering by TCI here was a fairly basic 10/10M fixed IP offering, also with no restriction on operation of servers but providing very basic email and later modest web hosting. It cost $39.95/mo. including lease of the modem.

Almost all of this became possible due to fiber laid between about 1987 through 1990.

This quickly went to hell as the money grubbing bastards started aggregating these pioneer efforts into cash-cow operations and the executive compensation packages became more grandiose by the quarter. Restrictions were placed on service, service levels were reduced, and prices creeped ever-upward. For the most part this same fiber is what carries Comcast's overpriced and inadequate service here today (nominally 1.5M/256K, one dynamic IP plus caps and restrictions galore at $57.95/mo. with my own modem).

In those early days (ca. 1996) we were assured that capacity would be added and prices lowered due to economies of scale as market penetration ramped up. Hah and double-hah!

The days of the robber barons are here again, unfortunately not just in the broadband ISP industry though.
