Gee What a Shame

Do you think we really care about AOL? I know I sure don't
I think what they charge is way too much for a dial up access account. I do pay more for my ISP service but then I am also on broadband. I think that people should not pay more than 10 bucks a month for a dial up access.

Ho hum

Aol does have a place, narrowbandly, for those users who lack the savvy to choose their own content and the technical know how to secure their machines. however their price point is wayy too high. Their arrogance is appalling, but not unheard of in the business world. They need to streamline, offer a 10.00 permonth fee and tweak their broadband options at about what they charge for dialup.

Re: Gee What a Shame

yep 10- is fair. Ironcially, that is about the going rate for Compuserve and Wal Mart, AOL's 'other" brands, same content, same look and feel.
I switched LONG ago from AOL, and am with Comcast now. When I did, dial up was over 20- a month (debited from my checking which they charged extra for mind ya) and Comcast (AT&T at the time) was charging me about 30-. Now what is the smart decision there I wonder LOL As a general rule of thumb, if you don't use AOL's chatrooms, you really do not need AOL. We all seee their adds saying a "safer internet and blah blah blah" well as long as it's a pc with windows, it's never really safe. People say well the email is easy and this and that, well ya so it Yahoo email. Save yer cash folks, get away from bad customer support who try incredibly hard not to let you cancel yer account! Last but not least, I would say, get a real ISP, that doesn't cost an arm and a leg where their stoopid built in browser doesn't make websites look like crap and doesn't need a gazillion recorces to run!

heres a tip

1) lose your freaking bloated piece of poop software.
2) just give the users the pipe to the internet, leave everything thing else (browsers, firewall) to the user
3.) offer higher speeds, and do no cap the speeds.
4.) lower your price
and then maybe you will not lose as much customers.

 Huh?

quote:

According to this CNET article, the company has added 340,000 new subscribers in the third quarter, but has lost hundreds of millions - and things aren't looking better anytime soon.

I think we have a mis-print here... if AOL had lost "hundreds of millions" they wouldn't be in business anymore! :P

I think AOL is a dinosaur that has lived too long. Paying more than $10/month for dial-up is rediculous. Everything you get from AOL you can get for free elsewhere (although most of it is just spam anyway). I'm suprised they have lasted this long.

Re: Give up the ghost AOL!

AOL is correct in saying that they are adding new users all the time except if you take in the fact that most new accounts are from the uninformed, elderly, and free disk users who fail to see that AOL is overpriced and bloated.
You still see the millions everyday that have been enlightened leave the AOL flock.
Simple math as quoted in the article "the company has added 340,000 new subscribers in the third quarter, but has lost hundreds of millions".
AOL and broadband equals to late in the game.

AOL = Dodo

Nuff said.

AOL didn't have hundreds of millions subscribers to begin with. The author probably meant hundreds of thousands.

I tried aol

At the begining of the year i decided to try it cause i was low on money and 1000 hours for 45 days ended up being 8 months of service for $28.80. I tried to cancel 3 times then in august we got dsl our area and I told them to cancel and they tried telling me that i shouldn't switch cause dsl is problematic and i wouldn't like it I'm glad i switched I've had a few problems but i'm overall happy with dsl i love being able to click on a web page and it almost instantly show up or down load a program or mp3 in a few seconds instead of hours.
just my 2 cents.

AOL billed me for four months after I cancelled my account. And they were directly removing the cash from my checking account. I had several checks bounce as a result. They really are just scam artists.

Or talking about turnover...how many subscribers they have had and lost over the last decade.

You don't say?

You mean people don't want to pay $23.90-$28.90 for dialup service or better yet pay what an arm & a lef for their "broadband" service?

That is weird I thought people liking selling their souls just to get broadband.

No thanks I'll stick to my DSL for $29.95!

Another AOL Article...

From the article...

"narrowband is going to be around forever"

Ignorance is bliss.

I think narrowband will probably be around for another 10 years before it becomes extinct. But, how many years will it take AOL to plummet to the bottom? I still find it hilarious everytime I see someone with an @aol.com email address.

aol sucks

I don't like aol. I think they charge waaayy to much. In my opinion i think AOL is more for the beginner internet user. There is a dial-up company that is available in the seattle area for FREE! and i get faster speeds connecting to them that i did when we used to have AOL.
