Comments on news posted 2003-12-07 11:56:21: Kazaa Lite, the spyware-free version of the popular Kazaa file trading client, is no more. Though websites that offered the product hadn't done so for some time, NVMax and Slashdot report the party is now over for the software. ..

Rest In Peace

R.I.P. Kazaa Lite. We knew you well. Thankfully if you still have your copy of K++ it'll work- just no more updates I guess.

Re: Rest In Peace

I stopped using Kazaa a long time ago.(using kazza lite client) The quality is sub par and good for finding the odd anime series no longer available on irc. It had a good run though. I think the main developer is in Russia so he should show shaman and keep releasing updates and give em a taste of their own medicine. ;p

 Not for long

Unfortunately, I'm sure Sharman will release a new version of Kazaa soon only to change protocol, Kazaa Lite wont work for long I think.

Re: Rest In Peace

Still works, but I saw a lot of the files come up as failed when you try to start a download. Only a few couple files still work.

Meh.

BitTorrent is better, anyway. So is WinMX for that matter...

Ummm people

Kazaa is alive and well....it is kazaa lite that is no longer being OFFERED.

the kazaa lite software still works 100% but it is not longer being improved etc because of this.

I'm just stating this since the majority of comments on this article seem to be people who think Kazaa lite will no longer work and people who think the actual Fasttrack network is shut down

 Well....

I haven't used it in a while, but I still have a backup, somewhere. This was the thing people didn't like - was all the junk that Kazaa put on. And you couldn't even disable it with spyware programs like Ad-Aware. I know, I tried, and after I has removed some spyware, the next time I tried Kazaa, it wouldn't start - got a strange error message. I removed Kazaa entirely, but that didn't solve the problem. The remove didn't completely. That was the good thing about the lite version - no spyware & when you removed it - it was gone.
Oh, Well RIP

BINGO. Hold your cards folks. . . . per »www.slyck.com/news.php?story=339

This is what the Sharman Gestapo plan. . .

Not only has Sharman Networks succeeded in eliminating nearly every major resource of Kazaa Lite K++, they are systematically forcing it off the network.

How you ask?

Recent upgrades to Kazaa clients (2.5 and higher) make them less tolerant with outdated or non official clients such as Kazaa Lite K++. Kazaa Lite is based on a version prior to 2.5, therefore a current supernode will not accept its shares. Although this will cause network headaches in terms of traffic, the client will not be able to participate or download off the main FastTrack network. This will effectively cluster and isolate all modified Kazaa clients from FastTrack.

Well, won't Kazaa Lite clients simply form their own sub-FastTrack network?

Sounds nice, but no. Unfortunately, the developers of Kazaa Lite helped Sharman out tremendously by disabling the supernode function. Very few users who run this client are acting as supernodes. A decentralized P2P network with all clients and no supernodes cannot exist. The effects of this extermination is already taking place, as search times and connection times are deteriorating compared to K+ (the legitimate spyware/adware free version of Kazaa.)

As time progresses, the Kazaa Lite K++ client will become so unusable that its populace will be driven off the network. This latest act from Sharman punctuates a long history of hypocrisy that involves the protection of their own intellectual property rights, yet blatantly ignoring the copyrights of others.
