Comments on news posted 2003-12-08 09:22:40: 'Now Broadband TV' in Hong Kong is an example of a successful video via DSL business model. It's also a likely example of the stringent copy protection we'll see in the United States as video via DSL becomes a reality. ..

Angry American

[Rant On]
That's pure crap, but than again it's Japan. It will be 40 years down the road before I see anything like that coming around to my neighborhood due to captalistic america. Also wtf is up with not being able to copy anything? There will always be ways. If I pay for it, and it comes into my living room, I am allowed to copy it for my personal use.

Old stuff. Yahoo!BB/Softbank has been providing DSL TV here for a long time. It was world's first ADSL tv service.

Don't be that angry and you'll live longer. I think it's crap as well, I would not exchange my satellite dish for adsl tv or even regular cable.

Curious If that's a la carte? With no copying allowed?

They say only some VOD content is not allowed to be copied.

Whatever..LOL cause Netvigator still relies on NEC's equipment for the VOD solution. As for BBTV they are using Samsung STBs for customers.

Yeah,I know.Does it have something to do with the fact that Masayoshi is Korean at his origins? Could be, right? That's why I will never take BBcable. SkyPerfect rulez!

4.5mbps per channel???

quote:
deliver the video over DSL at speeds of 4.5mbps per channel
Are they providing 4.5mbps for each channel or is that for ALL channels combined? It reads a little differently in the article. For each channel that seems like a lot of bandwidth. If thats the case I don't see us getting this any time soon.

it could be setup so that you are getting 4.5mbit and it only sends one channel at a time..pretty ingenious way to get around bandwidth issues that plauge cable and satellite operators, although I have always thought that point to point communications systems are a waste when broadcasing, because the server needs 4.5mbit of bandwidth for each and every subscriber, even if the traffic is the same. Total waste of bandwidth IMO

Yep... its not like you can watch 3 channels at once. Logically, each set-top device uses its own 4.5mbps channel... and with the Far-East having dsl capable of 45mbps for $20... they could have as many TVs on at once as most familes do here in the US.

"although I have always thought that point to point communications systems are a waste when broadcasing, because the server needs 4.5mbit of bandwidth for each and every subscriber, even if the traffic is the same"

this is where multicasting technology comes in.

The server can send have a single outbound 4.5mbps stream, and the internet routers *should* do the rest.
