Lower spam today everyone?

Ha.. That makes sense on why my hotmail junkmail folder is decidedly empty today (been a long time since that's happened!).

Lots of new "Non Profit" companies

"...CPM Funding Inc., a California mortgage company, admits calling at least eight numbers on the registry...." I wonder if they are one of the ones I've received calls from recently that start of with something like
"Hi, this is Joe Schmoozer with FlyByNite Credit Inc, a non-profit organization. Please contact me immediately concerning your pre-approved loan for..."
I'm wondering how many new "non-profit" organizations are cropping up in light of the Do Not Call list? I find it hard to believe that ANY company offering to refinance my home, or consolodate my credit cards with a new loan, etc. etc. is "non-profit".

I'm getting a LOT of calls from two groups now:

Law enforcement fund raisers and 'research' organizations that call me to do surveys about home products and other such things.....The former I suppose is non-profit, but the latter generally are selling that info I have to assume?

Although I have yet to comb over it closely, the law enforcement "charities" that call me are non-tax deductible. So I'm wondering if an organization without that exemption meet the qualifications for "charitable" orgnizations permitted by the DNC list.

I admit I don;t (yet) know....

I signed up my home and cell numbers to the "Do not call" registry, but I find that I am still getting calls from telemarketers.

Wasn't there supposed to be some number that you were able to punch in (after the call) to submit a complaint and report a violation of that DnC list?

Actually most of the fire/police charities that make phone solicitations are scams. We got called by a fireman's family fund and when my wife asked where they were located, address etc. they wouldn't divulge anything. When she looked up the phone number for said charity and called it they said that they never to phone solicitations so the guy who had called us was just using their name to rip people off.

Amazingly good point. I usually have at least 15 spam emails everyday. Today there is only 4. Coincidence?

and the Calls keep coming from 800-624-7619

...a phone number I can't find in the online reverse lookups, nor could my SNET rep who answered my 811 call last week.

Has anyone found out who owns 800-624-7619 ?

Re: getting calls from who?

When they authorized the Do Not Call List, they should have also enacted a law that all businesses including telemarketers cannot block their numbers from caller ID. Caller ID I feel is useless, all businesses block their numbers. Caller ID should also display what country the call is from if it is outside the US.

Then I guess this is just another way for the TELCOS to make money off people how buy the privacy director service to take the calls that are blocked.

Re: Lots of new "Non Profit" companies

Speaking of Law Enforcement charities.
My parents were out of town last holidays and i stopped by their place to feed their animals while they were out and ended up answering a phone call from one of these orginizations. After the "long-winded intro speil" i told them i wasn't interesed. The caller started to refer to me by my fathers name, and i began to argue the fact that i wasn't my father. Needless to say i hung up before it got anywhere.

Mid January he got a collection notice from the Orginization. Seems he had given to the charity before and they had his bank accn't info on hand and went ahead and charged a "donation" to it and he contested it via the bank and so they sent a collection notice.
Also after contesting everything and ending the collections my parents started recieving threatening phone calls from someone at this orginization.
Long story short, calls to the orginization were fruitless, and my parents had to file a complaint with Bellsouth and have the offending numbers blocked.
Since they went thru all of that it has turned me off on most of these charity places. Their tactics, even if it was isolated to one employee, seem shady at best.

Lower spam today everyone?

Apparently, Hotmail had been setting "spamtrap" addresses from May 12 to June 13 as part of the investigation into Scott Richter & OptInRealBig. Millions of email spams were sent by the Richter & Company . . . 8,000 of which were to the spamtrap addresses.
Note: The following is a .pdf file - »www.oag.state.ny.us/press/2003/dec/syn1.pdf

Conjecture
Spammers may now know that Hotmail is "sprinkled" with these spamtrap addresses and may be laying off sending spam to Hotmail in order to avoid hitting these spamtraps and drawing attention to themselves.

Re: Lower spam today everyone?

I've been reporting every single spam that gets past the Hotmail filters.

My filters are fairly limited to ten rules and YES SPAM has started cutting back.

(Edit) LOL it's span not Spam.
