Comments on news posted 2004-01-19 09:18:00: With the increase in spy and ad-ware has come an increase in the number of applications that promise to deal with such headaches. Unfortunately many either don't get the job done, cost too much, or manage to make your PC worse. ..

Not to make this a spybot vs. ad-aware dispute, spybot finds a heck of alot more spyware on a PC the the latter. Plus its ability to download updates to detect new spyware makes it incredibly accurate.

ISP should help you keep stuff off your computer?

Ok, wheres teh logic in this...

Does your ISP provide a firewall, a router, or anti-virus utilities?

Why should your ISP be in charge of you keeping stuff YOU download and install off YOUR computer?

ISPs provide the internet, that is it. If you dont know something, READ A BOOK.

Re: Spysweeper?

AdAware is good, but Spybot Search & Destroy is better, it has caught alot of things on my machine that AdAware never even spotted. I used Spysweeper in the past, it works well also, but it costs too much I think.

Heck, both of them do a good job. What I do is run ad-aware first then spybot to double check.

But.......

Slightly off topic but those items that are found by either are deleted by myself yet just keep reappearing. How do you keep this from happening with either of the two programs (never did figure that out)? I went and downloaded SpywareBlaster and that seems to have taken care of it for me but I was just curious if I had been missing something by using either of the two problems alone without the SpywareBlaster.

Re: Spyware Removal

I prefer a 5 star program called SpywareBlaster (freeware) made by : »www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

It prevents spyware from getting onto your computer in the first place. I do however us Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy »www.safer-networking.org/index.p···download (also freeware). These three combined leave my pc spyware/ad free.

Spybot Is Good, But...

Pest Patrol is far better than either Spybot or AdAware. Over a year ago, AdAware was the stick the others were measured by and then Spybot stole the throne when AdAware supposedly allowed some companies to buy out of their removal list. However, when I tried Pest Patrol it found 23 additional items (not just cookies) that Spybot missed (and even with the latest updates, still misses).

Also, Spybot is updated on a "whenever" basis so it isn't as accurate as Pest Patrol which is updated almost daily.

All that said, Spybot is free so you really can't complain. I just bought Pest Patrol after using the eval and nearly paid $40 for it on their site. ZoneLabs (makers of ZoneAlarm) are selling it as a special with the basic ZoneAlarm for $19.95!!!

Spysweeper - quite impressed

I just tried it out for the first time. It picked up items that spybot did not and even a trojan that was not detected by either my kaspersky AV or Tauscan trojan detector. It was the "xdiver" trojan. Mind you, I havent run tauscan for about a week so it might have picked it up if I had done so.) Spysweeper provides a lot of easy to read information on the spyware which is nice if you dont know what it is. Like you said, it is a little pricey.

*Update*
I restored all the spyware that was removed and updated tauscan and then ran the tauscan scan. It didnt pick up the "xdiver".

More importantly than which one you like, please donate to the one that you like. It gives the authors incentives to keep the applications supported.

I like spybot and have donated.

PestPatrol Used along with anti-virus software
Overview

How does PestPatrol differ from anti-virus products? Anti-virus products focus on viruses; PestPatrol focuses on every other sort of computer pest, including ANSI bombs, answering machine hacks, carding, denial of service attack tools, disassemblers, virus droppers, hacking guides, hostile Java, icq, key loggers, mail bombers, password crackers, phreaking, surreptitious remote control, remote monitoring, network scanning, sniffers, spoofers, spyware, surveillance, Trojans, Trojan creation tools, virus creation tools, virus writing tools, and word lists used by password crackers. As a result, PestPatrol detects more such pests, and is much faster than anti-virus products.

I concur! The only effective way to fight the bastards is with money (as unfortunate as that is). It's too bad that PayPal doesn't exactly have a clean reputation when it comes down to protecting your privacy and your credit card info. Fortunately we can mail a cash donation:

Oh yeah, Spybot - Search & Destroy rulez!

Actually, come to think of it, most German software rulez! (Ahead Nero, O&O Defrag, OpenOffice, WinRAR (that's Russian, but now is based in Germany, etc.)
