This virus is the worst I've seen.

I run a small mail server on my own domain for personal use only (2 people use the site) and my e-mail address is not popular/widespread. But damn, I've been getting this virus blocked by Norton a few every hour. For some reason, people are trying to send it to an address on my domain that does not, and never has, existed. something as simple as kevin@mydomain.com got a few virus e-mails, however no where has anyone registered with it. Getting a bit annoying.

Re: This virus is the worst I've seen.

This is part of the virus.

My domain name is being used in thousands of "spoofed" emails. I am having numerous problems with my LEGITIMATE email, so numerous that AOL is rejecting legitimate emails from me to my employee who is on AOL.

I have been studying the MYDOOM forged emails being returned by postmasters and I VERY STRONGLY suspect that the infection may actually originate somewhere from within the domains where the RECIPIENT'S ("To:" in the email headers) email comes. I have probably received over one hundred emails from two specific POSTMASTERS (advising me that I have the virus, which I don't). The domain name (only after the "@" sign) of the recipient is always the same, but the name of the recipient (before the "@") is always different. The name of the sender before the "@" sign is always different, but MY domain name is used.

I am enlisting the aid of Verisign (where my domain name is registered), but there is no resolution...yet.

What a nightmare!

Comcast SMTP not needed here?

I am on Comcast and am able to send using my own SMTP server address but only if I check "My server requires authentication"

This is not SSL and still on port 25. Is this due to my new host suppoting this -as I had to use CC's SMTP with my previous host?

I just switched my host to free www.1and1.com hosting

The problem is if Comcast were to block outbound port 25, you would not be able to use your own SMTP server, only theirs, unless your hosting service accepted connections for SMTP on a port other than 25.

I think that www.pair.com accepted SMTP connections on port 2525, for example.

Other port 25 checks

Some servers (notably AOL) also check your IP vs. dial-up IP ranges, and may reject your e-mail if it comes from a residential account instead of the ISP's mail servers. This also makes sending mail directly from your own server more difficult.

Frontier blocking port 69 stops Vonage

my vongage phone service stopped working after i moved it to a frontiernet.net DSL connection. apparently in order to get the firmware update the isp needs to leave port 69 unblocked. i had to bring the cisco ata adapter to a optonline.net connection in order for it to update. it updated the firmware immediately and my Vonage service started working immediately. I am now going to have get rid of the Frontier DSL service which is pretty damn slow anyway. The DSL is in Chelsea Cove Condominiums. I dont know if we can even get cable here. if anybody knows, please email me at patrick@pfreal.com

i spent an hour on hold with frontier. they continually denied blocking port 69. they claimed the only port they blocked is 25. they finally got back on the phone and admitted that they have blocked port 69.

Port 25 Block, The Truth

The truth is that some ISP do block port 25.
1. Some ISP's do emergency temporary blocks on port 25 when large amounts of spam are reported on a block of IP addresses. Hence, one reason why tech support will have you reboot your computer and power down your broadband modem for at least 60 seconds. If you don't have a static IP this should allow you a new assigned IP address.
2. Some ISP's find it in their best financial interest to have the customer rely on an email address owned by the ISP. This often effects their bottom line when completion offers better services/price.

I once had an Earthlink account for 4 months. I used it only a few times when traveling. I didn't have any use for their free email account and never intended using it. On the 4th month after multiple talks with their tech support, I found that a port 25 block had been place on my account because of suspected spam generation!! I did a quick check of the email address on that account (something like axt138tkf7@eartlink.com) and found it overflowing with spam.
You Figure???
I went through hell trying to get a refund and finally had to go through the credit card company.
