what a waste

With all this money going towards stopping music theft they could be using it to fund outside reviews on how to make the music industry better. But hey, that would be to easy.

 Some RIAA Magic......

The software, if the RIAA gets their way, would have to be installed in p2p applications to filter out any copyrighted materials....

And won't this just rock the world...Another words, RIAA will be stealing even more from software makers as well as there own artists...I wish our Congress would do us all a favor and nuke em....

I Think.....

......."psycho-acoustical" is the proper term when referring to the RIAA. Instead of dropping their old, worn-out business model of raping consumers and artists alike they continue to buy senators and congressman to use in a push towards worthless technology.

Are they ALL smoking crack?

Something as simple as an 8bit encryption with a password in the file title would frustrate this "listening" filter would it not? Or even zipping the mp3.

Damn, the lengths to which they will go to triple dead bolt that barn door never fails to amaze me. Get a damn clue and figure out how to create a $5 a month distribution system using the computer power of your customers (P2P) or go out of business. I've never seen such a hopelessly delusional bunch of jerk-offs as seem to populate the media industry.

Something that wasn't thought of....

I am sure if the DVD copy protection can be broken, then it will be a matter of time before the software is hacked into. RIAA have no brains whatsoever, except for when they see dollar signs in from of them. Will the RIAA get their heads out of their a$$, I mean the sand?

They will never win !!

lets face it with every new copyright protection software/hardware made there will always be someone who will find out how to circumvent it. as any avid gammer knows that these are defeated everyday with no-cd cracks for games so you don't have to keep putting in the cd to play it. the same will happen for what ever protection they come out with it will be reversed engineered and defeated. the riaa should take the money they are paying out for commercials and tracking and put it towards making albums more affordable. i would buy a lot more music if it was reasonable.

Check out the new P2P with auto-encryption!

I dont care how 'smart' the filter is, its not going to recognize (correctly at least) anything that has been encrypted prior to transmission. Wow, it took me all of 10 seconds to think of this -and- type it up...

It sickens me

I used to buy cd's only of I really liked that artists music (or more than one or two of their songs). Thinking if I bought the cd, the artist would be the ones receiving my money for their music......but I was wrong of course. This BS of "garbage files" on P2P networks and then "taking one step further?! Suing people that download music off these networks (or even the innocent) because the RIAA can't get enough $$green$$.....it sickens me .

Re: They will never win !!

You got some good points there Serial. I would buy more albumsIF 1) The CDs are $15 or lower and 2) They would have more of the less recognized music bands (IE check my profile for a nice list on which most isn't mainstream) on the radio instead of the same old Top40 shit on all the radio stations they are feeding to us and thinking we're just mainstream zombies.

If I wanted to support the band I really really like (IE Dimmu Borgir and Fear Factory for example), I would personally mail them a check of $20 or so, but for FF's case, I'd directly send them money since their CDs are from one of the top 6 record producers. The band WILL get the money, NOT the middleman.

Maybe as a monitor and not a filter.

I can't see the larger P2P networks voluntarily applying this unless the RIAA convinces Congress to pass legislation mandating it. Even then, there will be court fights delaying deployment, older versions without the filter circulating, and the inevitable new versions that are hacked to remove the filter.

However, if this were applied as a monitoring tool, then we might be getting somewhere. Suppose this was bundled into a Napster-like app. (Old Napster, not new Napster.) You could pay a fee to access the network. Once you have access, you can share/download all you like. The filter identifies and tracks the songs that are traded. This tracking is used to divide the access fees up among the copyright holders and the folks running the network.

This way everyone can be happy. Users can share and download music, the record industry can collect a fee from it, and the software company can run 100% legally also (meaning without fear of an RIAA lawsuit).

Of course, this isn't what they'll do. They'll use this technology to try to stamp out P2P and sue users into oblivion. After all, if they were smart, they would have implemented this with the original Napster instead of squashing them.

My thoughts exactly. Someone will have a crack for this before it even gets off the ground.

What I like about this battle...

Whatever technical solution the industry comes up with will be defeated by smart techie opponents. There is always a workaround, and this one is very easy to work around. There might be an initial deterrent effect, but once everybody learned to zip or encrypt, it would be useless.

the rIAA needs to wake up!

It sickens me what the RIAA is doing. People that just want the content, such as music, enjoy the ability to get it instantly online. Why the RIAA has more money then any of us would know what to do with and it makes me mad knowing what they're using it for! And I personally want others to hear the content that I personally like. If the rIAA is this irate about sharing of content where folks can distribute stuff, which in my view is a perfect promotional tool for them, which you'd think they'd want, then why not just ban traditional broadcast Radio from playing their stuff! when I say, when will we the consumer decide how we want stuff done instead of the RIAa crazy folks getting their way controlling everything from what we hear to what's done with it! Kill the RIAA!

I think it was Napoleon who said to never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.

I would think those who use P2P to trade files would be all for this new filter; it keeps the RIAA busy, and will be trivially easy to defeat. Not to mention that I don't think that copyrighted music sounds any different then public domain music; unless they only plan to filter out boy bands.

What a bunch of idiots

I can just see the presentation that sold this idea to the
RIAA.

My name is Dr. Joe Con Rip emoff, I represent the software
firm of "We Write it you Buy it". We have the solution to
P2P piracy. We have a song recognition protocol the uses
NSA wave mapping algorithm to convert the 430 Hz wizalous
stindunka wave to a axiomatic stream which is then read by a proposition chip which has a Dead Head trapezoid filter.
When a suspected copyrighted song is encountered the sample is sent to a Intel Lingus where it is flush input to the network. This is then loaded into an out sourced LAN in Swilankawhowingiedizooba, India. Which is the part of the gee Hindu Godhead Lord Shiva main frame. If the sound file is copyrighted Lord Shiva sends an angry tanka to destroy the computer down loading.

Hollywoodland RIAA executives are over joyed. At last a solution, we don't know who this Shiva thing is but he sounds good.
