And while I don't think it's a "great" Linux distro, it's a good first step, especially for those COMPLETELY unfamiliar with Linux. You will never just see one day everyone moving to Linux. It's evolution. |

Interesting gimmick. They can afford to cut the price because they don't have to buy the bandwidth to distribute it. How does the purchase work? Buy a key and download some psuedo-P2P software to get it. I'm neither familiar with Lindows nor BitTorrent...and will certainly remain so. |

1 edit | Great idea, really
It's a great idea, all around. I mean it's not like other Linux distros haven't done this, Mandrake and Red Hat have been available on BitTorrent for a while now. And Valve, after seeing its Steam P2P system fail miserably, went the quick and dirty route: they hired Bram Cohen, BitTorrent's creator. While BT has many illegal uses, it's good to see legitimate uses for P2P as well. The problem, of course, is greedy companies like Comcast who are fighting their customers' wish to run servers like BitTorrent. |

Good try, but... They may have issues trying to distribute it this way, unless there is some form of security to test wether the copy of Lindows hasn't been compromised - ie a hacked/bugged version put out to create havoc. I've heard of this happening before to an open source site (use them myself, but check the MD-5 or other form of security to validate the files!!!). |

Lindows does not have it's own office suite, it is just OpenOffice with the icons and name changed. It is a nice idea, but the overall cost is too much. But, then most users need lots of hand holding so I guess it is worth it. If people are dumb enough to buy it, imagine what the support calls are like.:o I doubt that many people will use the new system unless installing and using are fairly brain-dead. |

Good try.. but lets look at it this way
Option one: Pay 25 USD for a torrent-like link to download Lindows
Option two: Do a bit of searching, and get a free link to download Lindows. (And I'll mention, doing some illegalness here heh)
Lets see what people will choose.. |

| Option two: Do a bit of searching, and get a free link to download Lindows. (And I'll mention, doing some illegalness here heh) There's two problems with that. 1) Only the technically inept would ever use a product like this, thus would have a difficult time finding the software on the internet. 2) The product is essentially useless for them unless they subscribe to the service. I played around with it a year or so ago, and unless you subscribe to their service, you have only basic functionality. Once you sign up, you get to download all sorts of goodies to make it a productive environment. So, they will end up with no choice but to pay anyway.
I recall a while back, Walmart was selling PCs with Lindows already preinstalled. Although everyone is giving it a bad rap, it's still a good way to wean inexperienced PC users away from Microsoft. |

Bit Torrent does hash files to make sure they are legit and not broken in download, and if it doesn't hash correctly the bad segment is redownloaded. -- What the big print giveth, the small print taketh away. |

Heres a tip: Never touch any OS with "indows" in its name.
Sinmply put they are charging you for mandrake which you can get for free off »www.mandrakesoft.com/ as for the BT version again they are taking someone elses code and making a profit off of it. |

Do you really have to use their Click-N-Run service. Are there ways around that for the semi-computer savvy (like me)? I downloaded a legit free copy of Lindows. I like its speed (vs other Linux distros I tried) and ease of use, but I hate the idea of having to pay for otherwise free Linux software. |

| It is Debian based, so you can use apt-get to install software. I don't know if thay have any repostories in /etc/apt/sources.list, but adding them is easy. Here are some files you might need, the all go into /etc/apt/ |

Fake or Flake, RIAA will never allow it to happen...RIAA wants the p2p world to disappear. Does anyone really think that RIAA would allow any form of legal OS that has any sort of music on it (IE wave, midi, streaming) to get by them without paying any sort of tribute (tax) to them....Me thinks not, and Linux is in there line of fire anyway for past infringements upon there perceived kingdom... |
