F#$% Viacom

I am glad to see that Dish Network has some balls to stand up to viacom. I would not miss MTV ect... since I have all of the Discovery channels like the Science Channel. In fact that is why I dropped Comcast. All of the channels Comcast is offering are crap and for the same price I got double the channels with Directv.

Re: LOL Crazy stuff

To bad Viacom doesn't tell the truth. They should say,

said by Viacom:

Call Dish Network and complain that they aren't just bending over for insane rate hikes and blackmail at customer expense. All we wanted was to force Dish Network to carry channels no one wants while paying high rates for them. What's the point in buying off all these politicians so we can buy up channels if we can't force Dish Network to carry them? It's not fair that we buy off the FCC and Congress and not get anything for it.

I could care less...screw Viacom

Screw Viacom. As a Dish sub I'm satisfied with Dish going to task with them over programming hikes. I have no problem losing channels, cause either the war comes now in this form of a lock-out or later when I'm bent cause Dish takes another price increase.

This is the same bullsh!t ABC pulled with Dish Network 2 years ago. It's not about the 6 cents, it's about blackmailing Dish into paying for and carrying channels no one wants. ABC threatened to pull their network programming when Dish didn't want to pay massive increases for the poorly rated ABCFamily channel.

Viacom can bite me. Enough of this monopoly crap. This is why the FCC's job shouldn't be to worry about friggin Howard Stern or Janet's tits but concern itself with just a handful of companies like Clear Channel, Viacom and Newscorp owning all the programming then blackmailing distributors like Dish Network.

Re: I could care less...screw Viacom

That's one of the reasons I still have my Big Dish system. I pay for just the channels I want, and not for a bunch of other "filler" stuff. Of course, the channels that I don't care care for may be someone elses favorite, and that's OK with me. There's something for everyone, but I want to be able to buy what I want to see, and not have to pay for it on a "take it or leave it" basis.

Re: I could care less...screw Viacom

I bought my whole system for $250 at a garage sale. Many times you will see one of the Big Ugly Dishes (BUD) next to a house which has one of the KU band dishes installed. You may be able to get the big dish system for little or nothing if you talk to the owner.

Spare parts, such as receivers, polarotors, LNB's, cables, actuators, etc, are easily found on eBay and also are available from various new equipment suppliers at fairly reasonable prices.

You will need a working VideoCypher unit in order to receive any of the encrypted channels. Check eBay for those, too. Digital encryption is fast becoming the norm on BUD systems, and you can simply add a digital box to an existing system or spring for a new digital receiver for not too much more.

Then extra that you pay in hardware costs for a BUD is more than made up for in what you save on programming costs.

Cool $2 off...I vote to keep Viacom off

said by Dish Network:

Will our bill be reduced if the channels go dark?
Customers with a removed CBS station will receive a monthly $1 credit until the station is returned. Also, customers with America’s Top 60, 120, 180, America’s Everything Pak. DISH Latino Dos or DISH Latino Max will also receive a $1 monthly credit for the removed MTV Networks.
I get a $2 discount for losing channels that sucked anyway. Right on. Later Viacom, you suck.

Sympathy blackouts.

Maybe cable operators can dump viacom channels in sympathy, i could easy live without those channels, and it would give cable operators some clout.

Screw MTV/Viacom, I want my Dish Network

This news makes me want to go back to Dish Network especially if without CBS and MTV crap the packages will be cheaper.

MTV is absolute garbage and they don't even play any music. I hate the fact that even one dollar is spent on them when I pay my cable bill. With Dish I could always get CBS anyway by over the air antenna.

I also hope Dish does not back down from these increases for the Viacom garbage.

SCi-Fi chsnnel is next up.

Isn't the Sci-Fi channel owned by Viacom?

If it is you can expect it to be the next channel to get the kick.

I do hope the contract isn't soon.

uhhhhh no

I can honestly say I haven't watched ANY SciFi since they dropped Farscape. I even put them in my block list so I wouldn't accidently park there while channel surfing.

MTV is no loss. Road Rules was ok when it first started out and Daria was awesome but now it's on Noggin anyhow. The rest of their shows are pure drivel and now I have audio channels to give me music when I'm looking for it.

Screw SciFi, screw MTV, and screw Viacomm.

(And yes, I am a Dish Network customer.)

What about Voom?

I have just signed up for Voom service and it looks pretty cool. A lot of HDTV content compared to DTV which has very little. No locals other than digital but big deal.

Re: What about Voom?

I have posted on other threads regarding this 3 times already.

I have had VOOM since early January and if you have a HDTV, it does not make any sense (to me) to subscribe to anything but HDTV content. VOOM is a little pricey for the start up cost compaired to sat/cable, but worth every penny. It made the investment in my 65" Pioneer projection HDTV worth it day one.

I made the decision to keep my existing 150 channel Dish package on the bedroom TV. Many posters express that this spat is all about money and the consumer is in the middle. That is partially true, But the Founder/CEO of Dish has impressed me to the Nth degree. This MAN personally went in front [ Tues evening at 7pm Pacific ] of his customers, explained his companies position, THEN took all of the HARD questions from his customers regarding the situation live on the air. He basically addressed ALL of the questions I have read (in one form or another) on these threads. Including the 6cents/subscriber lie.

If Viacom/DTV customers think for one nano-second that Redstone (Viacom) or Murdoch (Fox/DTV) would EVER, under any circumstances have upfront dialog with their paying customers (that's you, the DTV/MTV customer), I have some WMD's for you to find in Iraq... ain't gonna happen.

So now, after being a 5 year Dish customer, I am now a "raving fan" of Dish. I will always pay for superior service and customer communication at a fair price before ever considering spending my hard earned money with people like those that run Viacom that I (now) know just want to fund their next personal Gulfstream V on my back.

Greedy CEO worship is so 5 years ago.

Woohoo! Let's slap corporate greed in the face one more time EchoStar! w00h00! Get rid of those other corporate giants who try to monopolize and ball the media delivery companies. The last thing I wanna see is dish prices jumping up like cable companies do. No content is worth that kind of extra cash.. unless it's porn! lol j/k

Who Needs Who the Most?

The bottom line is this: Viacom needs their programming on every cable or satellite provider's service or they will lose viewers and will lose ratings and lose advertising dollars. Dish IS doing the right thing.

When local stations were first allowed to demand a fee for cable tv to carry their signals, CBS was making the stupidest demands for cash to allow cable to carry their owned stations. It came down to the last few days but CBS (this was long before Viacom was involved) relented because they knew they needed the cable companies more than the cable companies needed them. It's still the same. By the time the May sweeps begin, this whole thing will be over and Dish will NOT be paying the high fees Viacom is asking for today. Viacom will not let the May sweeps happen without their channels on every cable and satellite system possible, it would be suicide to do otherwise. Dish knows that and will hold out for the 6 or 7 weeks. Viacom will lose much more by the absence of their channels from Dish than Dish will ever lose.

My brother likes and wants to see CBS

My brother likes and wants to see CBS(He watches 60 Minutes), So He's canceling His Dish Network Service and getting Me to install Charter Cable TV Service, But that's cause I have Charter Pipeline Gold Service, Since He pays for TV He's in charge(It's His house and I live there too), Me I don't like what's being done either, But there isn't anything I can do, I'm a renter here.

Re: My brother likes and wants to see CBS

tell him to get an antenna

heck offer to buy it for him they cost less than 100 bucks

this whole thing will probably blow over by sunday night anyway--cbs can't afford to lose ratings from a cash cow like 60 minutes

Is Dish Network really looking out for US?

I'm not sure if anyone has brought this up yet, and I may be totally wrong.

IF Dish Network were to give in to Viacom, wouldn't that make their package prices much higher than DirecTV's packages? And wouldn't people (and especially NEW customers) flock to DirecTV for the cheaper prices?

Just wondering if this situation would be true. If so, that is why Echostar is fighting so badly - so they won't lose out to DirecTV, not to protect us the subscribers.

I'm a HAPPY Dish Network subscriber by the way.

This is a good thing!

MTv is one of the most worthless channels out there. They ruined the 'Music Television' channel by not playing music videos 24x7 and then tried to redeem themselves with MTv2. Unfortunately, their habit ruined that channel, too.

I look at this as a good thing.

By the way, why does this focus on MTV? I know a lot of kids and parents are mad about losing Nickelodeon. I hope they get this thing eventually works out...somehow. BTW again, would out local CBS still be on Dish Network since it's not owned by Viacom?
