It's All About Money

I personally don't see it happening but I don't know what all the PROs would be for MS.

A lot of people think its bad because of the Noob factor. Well think of it this way.........where would you have them go? You can't bitch about how MSN and AOL make it easy for their customers while at the same time calling for the death of both companies because if that were to happen, all of these noobs would end up at your provider. Then you'd bitch about that.

Kinda reminds me or segregaton ..... Blacks move in, Whites move out. But when Latinos move into the Black neighborhoods, Blacks move to where the whites are and the Whites move again. Its funny as hell but its very true about how we are as a people.

What else to do with 53 billion?

Microsoft is sitting on 53 billion in cash. If they can't figure out a way to multiply those dollars faster than bank interest rates, they need to give them back to investors. Grabbing 23 million subscribers might pay off. Certainly, it would be appealing in the boardroom, since it doesn't require technical creativity. With that mass of users they could start adding more OS capabilities that only work with MS network services and vice versa. Thankfully, it appears there will still be large markets outside the US where independent innovation can occur.

Heres A Thought

How about Comcast taking the broadband side of AOL over?

Just think twice as fast for less money; its AOL DSL like over $50/month.

AOL users and Outlook

Am I the only one here that shudders at the thought of a few million AOL users being weaned away from AOL's proprietary e-mail system and switched to outlook?

If you think the e-mail virus problem is bad now, just wait until that happens...

Re: AOL users and Outlook

i use incredimail to check my comcast email. its free and easily interfaces with all FREE av programs such as AVG Grisoft and AVAST which are both ICSA Certified.

So whats your point???? u dont have to use outlook to access a pop3 account.

Wonderful...

Well, if this happens, it will screw ANY hope of an AOL client for Linux.

MSN, the ultimate powerhouse

Just think if Microsoft does buy AOL, Microsoft will be the ultimate powerhouse. Besides getting AOL's 24 million subscribers, Microsoft will also own the very popular programs on the net like Winamp, Netscape, and ICQ. If Microsoft thought they were under the microscope now, they would just put themselves over the top if they bought AOL.

Though I am sure if Microsoft did buy AOL, Microsoft would be forced to sell off some of those programs or get rid of them all together. Either way, Microsoft will be on top just like with everything else.

Microsoft is already the "ultimate" powerhouse. This just adds to their success.

Why Not?

They'd probably buy it for cheap, like how verisign bought up network solutions for $21 billion (in stock) and then sold it for $200 million.

Yeah they are both really crappy companies. I mean, what they worth? Dozens of billions each? Pfft. Any company could do that.

Anti-Trust Problems?

I wonder what this could mean...

Since most computers sold retail come with an AOL icon on the desktop, just like the Internet Explorer icon that cause the big Antitrust problem.

So, since they would now own AOL, would it become a big thing?

Why

Why would Microsoft want to buy AOL? Clearly AOL was/is not a good investment.

Great Idea!!!!

Absolutely... AOL managed to manipulate Time Warner into a very stupid and completely profitless acquisiton, wherein Time Warner lent one hell of a lot of market value to a company which was so over valued during the dotBomb fiasco....

Timer Warner lost their arses buying AOL. Time to infuse more money into AOL. Sell them and let Microsoft buy them. Great idea and to my thinking Microsoft deserves AOL.

PLEASE let this be a joke!

AOL already makes the worst possible software for the Windows OS. It would only get worse if AOL WAS a part of microsoft!

Good god, billy... PLEASE DON'T DO THIS! for the love of everything that's still good in this world!

Redmond wasn't busy enough this week(end) to be busy buying up AOL. Sorry folks.
