Verizon is not willing to make the capital investment needed to rewrire area beyound 18K. So no DSL. Don't even talk about fibre. I am luckly the my Verizon pots line works. Just took them 8 truck rolls to fix it between Jan and Feb. |

I converted and recanted
I had said some bad things about DSL's overhead. But when I got a 6mbs connection from SBC and used it for video-phone -- BAM! I saw how much better in terms of time sensitive packet delivery it was. I'm a DSL convert. |

I'm looking at Verizon FTTP's rollout -- right here in Keller. I was cynical too about ANY telco doing FTTx -- but Verizon is really doing it -- they deserve our highest praise and admiration if they really turn-out to have that kind of vision and foresight. |

That's only in one state. In Pennsylvania, where they promised FTTH by 2004 and didn't even try, there is no progress. Why praise them, for slacking and ripping off governments. "We failed on our rebuild so please give us more money." What, are they a dot-com?
You pay more for cable modem but it works. Believe it or not, and I know this will blow some of your minds here, but high-speed internet connectivity actually costs money. When ILECs lower their prices, they are only doing it to keep the POTS money. Be aware of this: they'll jack the rates again once they've snared enough folks.
However, I think all of this misses the best point about the article: broadband is growing dramatically in an otherwise shrunk economy. How can we translate this growth into growth of other businesses? How can this fuel a recovery? There's money out there somewhere...

I started out back in 1999 with DSL from Bell Atlantic(Verizon). That lasted 1 month. I was working in NetOps at a BLEC at the time, Building out our own SDSL network, so I knew what was and what wasn't possible with DSL. Verizon simply failed at every opportunity to turn it up and keep it stable. I then Moved to @home(Comcrap). I stayed with them till last month. Nothing but 4 years of HELL from them. I placed an order with Speakeasy for 3000/768 Business ADSL. I cant be happier! 8Ip addresses, DNS hosting for 5 domains, 100 emails@ speakeasy, 100emails for 1 of my domains, VPN ok, Servers ok, Share my bandwidth with others ok! DSL is going to make huge moves this year. All of my old and new clients are getting DSL and cancelling cable. Not only a plus for DSL, but a minus for cable...All at the same time!!!! Speakeasy is AWESOME so far. Give em a looksee. |

The only reason why DSL reigns supreme worldwide is that most of the world do not have a well developed cable TV system like the US. In Europe, satellite television is much more popular than cable since it has been around much longer.
And since telephone systems are in basically every country and these telephone carriers basically use the same copper wiring as for your phone service(only central offices need to be upgraded), it makes sense why DSL is much more popular than cable.
DSL providers here in the US kick themselves in the foot when they decided that they weren’t going invest millions of dollars to extend their DSL coverage beyond several thousand feet. SBC a couple of years ago started its “Project Pronto” to bring DSL to virtually 100% of its service region but reneged on their commitment. SBC complained that it wasn’t going to go ahead with Project pronto because the FCC forced it to share its lines with rivals. Too bad, competition is a good thing and it keeps prices down.
There will never be true competition is some people can get DSL and others can’t while most if not all cable systems have been upgraded to offer high speed internet. I think cable will always have the advantage in the sense that it offers more bandwidth than traditional DSL(not fiber) so there will always be a speed advantage with cable even though its nodes are shared. My cable modem speed used to drop during heavy primetime usage but not anymore since Comcast have upgraded its system. Now I get consistent speeds through out the day.
To be honest, I really do believe that if there were truly real competition between cable and DSL meaning(both were available to everyone who wanted it and they offered the same speeds), prices would be lower because every consumer would have a choice between the two and whoever offered the lowest prices for a comparable service will win consumers hearts. |

Yes it does cost a pretty penny, but compare the capabilities on an a la carte basis and it ends up being much cheaper than anything else i have found.
1- DNS hosting for 5 domains. Can be found for 8-15$ per domain/per year elswhere.
2-100 email addresses. Who else gives you 100???
3-100 email addresses @your domain w/unlimited aliases!
4-Just got upgraded to 6000/768kbps.
5-Technical support is the BEST I have ever seen. Sales people are on the Ball too. Nothing like those Morons@comcrap.
6-I have run Ethernet to 3 neighbors this week. 2 are next door on either side. (less than 50 ft. each) I have given them each their own Linksys which I will manage. They also have use of a routable IP. With unlimited tech support I will charge them $15.95/month.(15.95 x 3= $47.85)
7-I am in the process of ordering an installing a small roof-top tower and antenneas for Wi-fi for those too far for ethernet. Point to points and an Omni on another channel. I will charge 9.95 for that/month. I've got 2 signed up for that once it is live. (9.95x2=$19.90)
8- $19.90+$47.85=$67.75 Then- $119.95-$67.75=$52.50 ( 7$ more expensive than comcrap so far) but I get 8IP's, double the bandwidth on the Dwn and triple the BW on the UP, dns for 5 domains, VPN is ok, servers are ok...etc.
9- I get a kickback from Speakeasy for anyone I refer for their own line.
Who else can provide broadband speeds @$9.95 and $15.95 with on-prem support? |

|  Oh yeah, that 3rd neighbor 2 doors down(135 ft).
I'm debating whether or not to run fiber over to her or piggyback off the other neighbors router(50 ft). They get along well, so i dont think it would be too much of a problem for either party involved.
I figure fiber would be too delicate to be out in the weather without extensive trenching or conduit.
1/4 inch PVC conduit will not be too expensive for the short ethernet runs and easy to trench over. |

The point that I'm trying to make is, these "faster than cable" dsl deals are not available for everyone. A few people here in Hercules might get dsl at or above Comcast's speeds(if they are close enough)...but, everyone in Hercules(if they are wired for cable) can get pretty much the same speeds as me. DSL is not an option for some of us.
If you are one of the few that can get those speeds,at or below the $42.95-$57.95 that Comcast(or other cable ISP)offers...I am truly happy for you.
$199.00 per month + having to change my phone service for 1100/1100kbps, or $35.95 per month + changing phone service for 384/128kbps...I just can't see it. |
