Comments on news posted 2004-04-08 11:01:49: Many broadband users naively assumed that if they stopped using Kazaa and switched to Bit Torrent they'd be out of range of what they view as the great unblinking eye of Sauron - the RIAA. ..

Bit Torrent - Safe?

About as safe as ES5! For P2P without the worries, google for "Kazaa Lite Resurrection 0.0.7". It's alive again...and easier than IRC.
I never liked BT, or "torrent files".

Use Protowall

Peerguardian suxs you should use protowall instead, it's a little more difficult too install(require you to install a driver in your network connection, but it uses shit all cpu and blocks a wide range of connection protacols tcp, udp icmp ect ect, it also stops them from even connecting unlike peerguardian and if you use it in conjuction with the blocklist manager you'll have the most upto date list.

People who use it report that they know longer receive emails from MPAA ect ect

Move to Canada. EH !

Move to Canada, where downloading and possessing downloaded music is legal, only providing said music for download is illegal without license from the original content provider. As yet no laws or regulations have been
enacted to deal with or facilitate the complaints of the movie and tv industries but with all likelyhood they will be similar to the above. As far as software and games are concerned, well they never get broadcast to the public by any means unlike music, movies, or tv so it will never be ok to have pirate copies. But say la vie!

Some take the Blue Pill Some Take the Red Pill

Pir8'ting 101:
Big Files such such as movies and games that start hitting the Gigabyte limit are usually best to get from Usenet since your normally a couple a hubs away from the user that posted them. Of course the downside is that there is rarely anything old on Usenet's besides what you request. The Second choice of course is Bittorrent since it allows you to download Simultaneous streams from other users who also have partially downloaded files. The Bad part is when you have 1,000 leechers on 1 seed. Kazaa and any other p2p program (*Morpheus, WinMX, EDonkey, etc) Are more of your run of the mill music downloading methods since you really don't want to bother downloading a movie that is a hoax or my personal favorite, older movies that have been re-named to newer movie titles.

Irc is the dark water that only a true pir8 can call home. Although the speed on Irc is limited (* Unless you share for about a week and get in Distro) the Selection is impressive. Irc channels are constantly moving around, I like to think of it as an island that no one can get to unless they have all ready been there. My personal choices are as follows:
Usenet for the Newer stuff
Bittorrent for the relatively moderate junk
Irc for my rare goods
Kazaa,etc, for the music.

As far as security goes, Bittorrent could be run with a proxie but you get lots of problems and tends to get slow. Usenet is awesome and I haven't seen any problems with it besides missing 1 par or rar file and getting mad. I think people will eventually migrate into a "Real-World State of Mind" where they realise that the most secure way were your 100% guarantee not to get caught (* This might come as a surprise to some) is to get a job, buy your shit, and quit whining. This is a risky business and if can't handle a little risk, then get off the boat. On a positive note, I think the best solution is to get a friend to get a job @ your local ISP and tell them to give you a line....Go Dig a whole, bury a Server in it with a Connection and all, then go home and run that sucker till the RIAA comes with there bloodhounds and digs it up...I got a shovel, anyone interested?

Hmmmm.. many don't understand BitTorrents....

As a person who not only uses bittorrent trackers regularly, but also runs a highly active torrent tracker, let me say that there IS data to work with that refutes some of the arguments made in earlier posts.

1. Almost 95% of the letters generated from MPAA, RIAA et al, are to people who accessed their torrent downloads from SUPRNOVA, even though the announce tracker was elsewhere. It is the primary reason why many of the semi-private trackers like ours makes it very very clear in our rules that our torrents may NOT be uploaded to SUPRNOVA, or a couple of other large mega-trackers.

2. PeerGuardians lists DO work just fine. There will always be some holes that need to be filled, but for the most part PG is OVERKILL with their current list of over 59000 IP's that are banned. The idea that RIAA, MPAA et al, can just jump over to another IP is specious, because they are in the same shoes as the rest of us and are limited to a range of IP's that their ISP's or THEY have registered. To change to a completely new range requires more than just saying, HEY CHANGE ME... or rebooting. This is NOT to say that they CAN'T... but it takes time, and it is only good until the first person identifies the IP.. then that whole range gets put on the PG list. IT works TWO ways as well. The PG and other lists are in my tracker with a PHP file. They can't even GET to my tracker. THEN.. the individual seeders and leechers have PG or similar loaded in their torrent clients which is a double whammy of protection. Sure a few will get through, but it's the best protection available.

Bittorrents ROCK! On a good tracker with active swarms, the speeds cannot be beaten by ANY other P2P system. If you're lazy and just go to SUPRNOVA, you're just asking for trouble ... in spades!

Google "Bittorrent Tracker", and you'll find plenty.. and then you can be picky. Two of the BEST (and largest) are www.torrentbits.org --- and --- www.filelist.org

Both have a maximum of 100,000 members, and are full at the moment... but they purge inactives regularly, and if you happen to hit them with an opening.. it's well well well worth it!

why not find a VPN anonymous service??

Hi all,

I am a computer technician and completely understand the IP structure and the many ways your REAL IP address can be spilled off (EVEN IF U USE ELITE ANONYMOUS PROXY SERVICES).

Lets suppose you are using a normal anonymous HTTPS/SSL enabled proxy service and the provider who gave u this proxy server says "it keeps no logs of any of your uses from it", you do the normal thing, you go to internet explorer, go to tools, then click at connection tab and click at proxy settings, then enter your proxy's IP address (for this example, lets make believe its 68.0.0.5 with Port 1080) you enter "68.0.0.5" and enter "1080" as port number and then check the box where it says "use same proxy for all protocols", and u PROUDLY say "I DID it, I am TRULY 100% anonymous with ALL of my activities and no body can ever track me down". Well guess what, I have news for you, by doing this, you will ONLY be truly anonymous for sites that do NOT use the following web technologies: JavaScrips, Active X controls. The reason why I say this is that, why your browser is now connecting to any site using the proxy's IP address, THAT site that you are connecting may have Active X script within its HTML code designed to gather your REAL IP address outside from your web browsers environment, basically and Active X control is like a separate internet related program aside from your web browser, most of these Active X enabled website when keeping logs of IP addresses may only depend on the results they get from their Active X probes rather than using regular HTTP probes, THIS will spill out your real IP addresses.

There are many solutions for this problem, this is just going to cost you $9.99 per month, not bad if you want to avoid at all cost getting further letters from the RIAA and the MPAA, I know of a service that admits NOT to keep any logs of their users's at all, you can find their service at www.findnot.com, however its not free, they offer VPN (Virtual Private Network) anonymous services and Socks 5 anonymous services, for this small subscription you get both, now, the good advantage of VPN is that it anonymizes ALL of your internet activities, you do NOT need to modify the proxy settings from EACH Internet application, with VPN that acts as if that were your internet service provider, while logged on, all internet traffic passes through the VPN.

www.findnot.com was primarily created to help protect your computer against hackers from knowing your real IP address, but it can be used for ALL of your internet activities, it anonymizes HTTP, HTTPS, Socks, and UDP traffic even online gaming can finally be anonymized, even programs that does not support proxy configurations can be anonymized.

There are many other FREE alternatives if you do not wish to PAY for this service, however, this requires a little more knowledge, sufficient enough not to get fooled by finding fake proxies, As Known As "HoneyPots", HoneyPots are simply FREE proxies setup by the Government, the FBI, Law Enforcements, and Universities/Institutions with the purposes of Analization and THEN prosecution, you Definitely do NOT wish to find your anonymity on these proxies and they WILL keep logs, even longer than your regular ISP. These HoneyPots can often be found on lists of FREE public proxies, not ALL free public proxies are honeypots, so therefore you will need some special tools to examine the proxies you find to see now reliable they seems to be, one tool is called "Sendsafe honeypot hunter" from www.sendsafe.com (if the website is not correct, then google.com for "Honeypot Hunter") another reliable tool is "proxyrama" I dont have their URL saved now, but you can find it by doing a google.com search.

After you have compiled a good list of SOCKS 4 or 5 proxies that tests to be anonymous and NOT from dangerouns IP zones, you can then use a program called "SocksCap", what this program will do is that it will transverse ANY internet program ALL traffic through that SOCKS proxy, that means that ANY program that you add to SocksCap will connect to the internet via a SOCKS proxy, even JavaScripts can pass thru the Socks 100% effectively concealing your real IP address. You can download SocksCap from »www.socks.permeo.com/Download/So···ndex.asp

Make your browner EXTRA ANONYMOUS by blocking your web browser with your firewall AFTER you have added to it on SocksCap, if you use Norton Internet Security (2002+), you can block ALL traffic to the program "Internet Explorer" what this will do is that it will block internet explorer and all of its components from connecting to the internet using your real IP address, but internet explorer will still be able to connect to the internet through SocksCap, and all traffic will pass thru them.

You can do the same with Kazaa, you can add Kazaa to SocksCap, and all traffic will pass thru Kazaa, however, depending on the version of Kazaa that you are using, it may not successfully work with SocksCap, in this case, Kazaa will simply refuse to load UNDER SocksCap, if THAT happens to you, you can just add the Socks 4 or 5 proxy to Kazaa's firewall settings, you should be safe with that as Kazaa does NOT use any java scripts when searching and downloading and uploading files. However, Kazaa's build in browser (depending on site) may use Java Scripts, but that is not the main function that you will be using Kazaa for, you will simply be using Kazaa to upload and download files, for your internet browsing needs, just use Internet Explorer UNDER SocksCap.

If you ask me for recommendations, and you happen to be a new computer user or barely knows about computers, I would recommend that you get your VPN subscription from www.findnot.com and it will me much simpler for you to anonymize all of your internet activities. However, there are many warnings that I must spot to you when using VPN, you will be 100% anonymous for as long as the VPN connection is and stays active, the minute that you close, or this connection drops, you internet connection reverts back to normal and your real IP address remains visible again. To correct this, when setting up your new VPN connection, make sure that you enter "999999" under "redial" attempts, and select 3 seconds to "intervals", what this will do is that IF your VPN connection drops for any reason, it will redial it within 3 seconds again, with the objective of making up to 999999 attempts if it keeps on failing. If the connection fails again, just click at disconnect and connect again. Keep in mind that www.findnot.com hs 12 different VPN servers located on many international countries, the USA government does not have any jurisdiction to this service it self, it is based offshore, and again, they keep NO logs of any of its user's activities. This service is perfectly legal because every one is entitle to their 100% privacy rights.

Now please, do not use this service for illegal purposes, as we need more of these services serving the general public with all of their privacy needs and it cannot be abused in that matter.

About the Proxy farm earlier comment, I also went to their site and they offer similar promises, such as their proxies keeps NO logs of any kind, but that only applies to their very topmost premium paid services, not to their free services.

There are many other services out there, some are VPN based, while other are Socks/HTTP(s) based, you can do further research using www.google.com for "anonymous proxy services" or "anonymous proxy servers". When you find a provider, all what you have to make sure that they CLEARLY state that they keep no logs!, if they do NOT state this, they chances are that they keep logs.

On my opinion you can believe a provider when they say that they keep NO LOGS, because if they REALLY keep logs and any of its users gets a letter from the Music Association, or if they get prosecuted with the RIAA Even if they happen to use their "so called no logs keeping" anonymous services, the user have full rights to sue the anonymous provider for keeping logs when they stated they kept no logs. I have read many old articles where customers have successfully sued AND WON a case against some other anonymous service provider for keeping logs when in deed they said they kept no logs, that was before, now many of these provider are being very careful to say the 100% truth, you can rest assure that www.findnot.com is telling the truth about they keeping no logs of any of its user's activities, especially after hearing many of other lawsuits cases.

Here is my personal experiences with www.findnot.com:
I have downloaded some musics and some videos FROM kazaa while using their VPN services, I have about 6 years doing this, and I have NEVER EVER received a single letter from NO ONE, much less, I have never been sued by the RIAA!, I can admit that I ONLY download songs that I have purchased and that I have the legal rights to have under my posession, I agree with one of the previous posts by a guy that said that he downloads songs that he has from one of his CD's that got broken to replenish his broken album and create a new recovered CD, I do a similar thing, when one on my CD's that I have legally purchases at $18.99+ gets scratched, I HAVE THE LEGAL RIGHTS TO USE KAZAA TO GET A REPLACEMENT, I AM NOT GOING TO PAY THE RIAA AN EXTRA $18.99+ TO GET A NEW ONE they are DREAMING if they think I am going to do this, I already paid for the song, its now my rights to be able to obtain that song how ever I please.

I say that downloading music from Kazaa should be 100% legal with NO restrictions, is like recording a music from a Radio Station, whats going to stop me from recording a song off the radio station using a blank tape and then creating a mix? ummm are u going to make that illegal too? more sophisticated users can record a song off the radio station on a tape and THEM pass those songs on to a CD, OR hookup a radio turner to their computers (either by using a dubbing cable or purchasing a PCI Radio Turner) and use Sound Recorder at PCM 128 KBPS 16 Bits Stereo mode to immediately record the music in "what u hear" mode, and then convert the WAV file to MP3 format at 128 KBPS to 168 KBPS bitrate. to save disk space.

ONLY if every body knew and had sufficient expertise to defend their legal rights, we would make RIAA's life a LIVING HELL and teach them that our personal rights do also count.

UPDATE:
Anonymous A-DSL service is now available, how about using an internet service provider that keeps no logs of your IP address?, this can be done by using dynamic IP addresses.
you can find more about their services by going to:

for most users, www.findnot.com should be more than sufficient for just $9.95 a month (discounts do applies when subscribing for more than 1 months at the same time).
