Uses

I could see this being great for developers, and for hobbyists, but doesn't cygwin fill in the rest of the obvious applications for this already?

It's already a Microsoft strategy

They plan to create a Wmware inside Windows servers for integrate Unix services (Bind, Sendmail etc). They figured out that if you can run Unix services on Windows Servers, it's like having best of two worlds, ease of use and reliability. In other word, if they can't buy Unix like all others technologies they loved in the past, they will try to eat it by integration.

Apple did it because it was a huge leap forward from OS 9. But it'd be a huge leap backwards for Microsoft, so why would they downgrade their kernel to UNIX?

Isn't that what Lindows tried to achieve?

Better SMP, NUMA support, and a superior thread implementation. I am comparing Windows and FreeBSD.

1. In order to work, you have to create a Linux partion (can do so via the Sourceforge page for CoLinux.

2. Also need CygWin in order to run.

This port is not for the new user to Linux, and defiently has a curve, but will be great for using in multi environments that are being used in today's office world.

Re: Uses

Yes your right, but I dont know who would use FreeBSD for that anyways. IBM AIX or HP UX kicks anything coming from Windows.

 Linux: Got Patience??

This OS has got to be one of the hardest to install. Unfortunately, Microsoft have made it "too" easy to install Windows (is that really a problem??). Therefore, we are subjected to brain damage trying to figure out how to install Linux and its billion variations.

No wonder Windows is number 1. Linux, please become easier to install (speaking from trying to install Red Hat 7.x on a desktop). My current impression of Linux is anchored to pain.

Just my 2 cents.

Isn't that what Lindows tried to achieve?

But LindowsOS(TM) (»www.lindows.com/) was not controlled by Microsoft, so it had to go. Since the only people that got confused between the two names were the people at Microsoft, they sued to kill it claiming that many people got confused.

Especially live-cd distro's. If you found Linux hard to install, you MUST have tried the wrong distro!

Be careful -- This CoLinux thing is not easy to install! It takes a bit of Linux knowledge and Wiki-searching patience to figure out how to bootstrap a distro CD & boot it... Took me a good hour to do so!

I looked at CoLinux a bit --- It's actually a port of the 2.4.25 kernel (through CygWin). I was able to get their Debian 1GB image to boot. Networking is a PAIN to get set up.... their default image has no dhcp clients, so I had to do quite a readup on the route command....

Now, I'm apt-getting X11 and seeing if I can boot up a simple X/twm....
