Nobody likes us

Businesses have mostly gone south, taxes are at record highs, residents are leaving in droves and the major export is highly educated college graduates. Now utilities don't even want anything to do with upstate NY.

Ah, we're just simple country folk, don't need no fancy DSL out here.

Good maybe?

Though I have acceptable cable modem service from Adelphia, having a DSL choice where I live wouldn't exactly be bad - especially if they can offer more than Adelphia's 3000/256 for about $45. Verizon is everywhere here but I am too far from CO.

I take it phone service too? ...goes to read article.

no, basically they are doing it to force the PUC to calm down with regulations so they can "profit" aka charge you more money

I was thinking the exact same thing. I think Verizon's definition of nationwide coverage is in corporate double-speak - "We have at least on PoP per state and that's nationwide coverage... Every state is on the network."

by saying national coverage it just means they have agreements to carry the traffic all over the nation.

Rochester doesn't count in that stack.

I grew up in Utica, the center of upstate New York. We were jealous of Rochester because they never had to suffer Ma Bell (via New York Telephone) -- they had RT (Rochester Telephone), which today is Frontier. They're the second most populous city in upstate (Monroe County has a population around 350,000).

There are also other corners of the state not in Verizon's grip, most in the Adirondacks. Newport Telephone, which became Northland Telephone and then bought a successful ISP, is one of the few to survive.

Will any of this be good for upstate New York? Unlikely. NYS has all sorts of restrictions that kept Verizon from being happy even in the days of NYNEX (such as a 25¢ per call limit on pay phones, which led them to cut the time per call down to a minute).

By the way, what are the colors on the upstate map supposed to reflect? The area codes have significantly different shapes.

Wha??????

"Buffalo is a city of more than a million people"

Buffalo's population as of the 2000 census was 292,648, and continues to decline. Where did they get 1 million from?

Laugh about it, shout about it, when you've got to

Every way you look at this, us upstaters lose.

If Verizon leaves, who will take us and how will their service be? Will my callerID/forwarding bill go up? What about rate increases by a new carrier as incentive to take us in?

If Verizon stays, rate hikes will obviously occur.

Maybe AT&T is looking for residential customers. I'll have to actually read the next "urgent announcement regarding your residential service" they mail me.

Call their bluff!

Assemble all the munis in the area and actually buy the network. Two months later people will think Verizon was an insturment on the 1935 Brewster Buffalo/

think counties when you think NYS.

The city of Buffalo is only about 300k; when you include all suburbs in Erie County, you get to 1 million.

After all, NYS still has a population of 17 million. While more than half of that is in the downstate, that still leaves a population larger than Massachusetts north of Westchester County.

The Buffalo REGION. Not Buffalo itself, but the REGION! Did you find the any key yet or do you need help with that as well.

Re: Wha??????

The Buffalo MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area) covers all of both Erie and Niagara county. That might be what the writer of the article was referring to.

Looks more like a wireless plan "home area" map.

Re: Wha??????

If the poster meant region, then he should have SAID region. Karl since has said he should have said region. I did assume the author meant the Erie / Niagara county area. I just was curious.

So why the shot across my bow? This coming from someone in NIAGARA FALLS for god's sake, the 2nd most backward thinking city in the state, behind Buffalo of course.

If Verizon does sell SBC may put a bid in since they have CT with SNet.

back when MCI was not sure they were getting out of Chapter 11 they asked SBC to put a bid into buy them out but they refused. the FCC and FTC also asked SBC to do the same.
