Mircosoft

Kudos to Mirosoft. They understand that suing small individuals for copyright infrigment is not going to solve their piracy problems over the long term. Unlike the RIAA in contrast.

Re: Mircosoft

I'd say Microsoft understands the laws of demand and supply (and are experts in marketing techniques), while the RIAA doesn't.

I hope

I hope it is a trap to catch the pirates, but I'm sure it's not, yeah I'm sure it's not.

DOnt ForG3t

Need you all forget, that for a mere 9.99 they can have the cd with the patch sent to them in the mail, post it on there server and badda bing everyone patches, how do you think that the patchs are on the unlicensed copies that are patched. :o Not to say i have pirated copies of windows, I myself own three licensed Copies, however i do know of the above being done.

Anti priacy on sp1

Well they thought why spent hrs and hrs creating some anti piracy feature, that would crack before it hits the shelf.

Yeah they blocked FCK keys from Sp1, but that didn't stop people from releasing few cracks.

Yeah it stopped an below average person, who can't even google, from installing sp1.

Microsoft could block pirates if they wanted to.

The latest beta version of SP2 won't install on machines with the corporate version of XP that don't have a PID of XXXXX-640-XXXXXXXX-XXXXX. When SP1 was released, Microsoft reissued licenses to companies so all valid licenses would generate PIDs with 640 in it. This is the only valid form of a volume license PID currently.

The license generation program out there generates PID's with middle values from 641-650. These are all invalid and Microsoft could easily block all updates from these ranges if they wanted to. It was rumored they would in SP1, but they did not, presumably because the larger corporations couldn't update all their computers before SP1 was release.

It was also rumored that version 5 of Windows Update (and SP2) would not work with these pirated keys. According to the article they decided not to block the invalid keys.

Oh BTW, even though Slashdot posted this same exact article 2 hours after it appeared here, they didn't steal it from here. It was submitted to both sites at the same time.

Microsoft will follow RIAA's lead

Look at RIAA, they have set the precedent, Microsoft will track the users of the hacked versions and send them letters jsut like RIAA is sending letters to people who download music.

This is good, using a hacked version is stealing, this is why the software is so expensive, if everyone paid for their copy, the price would drop and be more afordable. Stealing seems to becoming a favorite american past time, stealing cable tv was where it all started, people are also now stealing satelite TV, music online, Software, where will it end? All this stealing just makes everything more expensive for US honest people out there, its ashame how many people are thieves, I beleive it people who have kids fault more than anything, they stole cable tv and their kids grew up thinking it was ok, so those kids grew up and are the ones stealing satellite, and their kids are the ones stealing music online, its a never ending cycle.

And then again, maybe not...

According to Steve in this thread, an MS source has told him that MS is *not* changing its official policy: »Microsoft Allows Pirates to Install XP SP2

Re: And then again, maybe not...

Obviously anyone running on a pirated version of Windows are so poor they cant even afford to pay attention so you think going after poor people is going to benefit Microsoft? Anyone who has a financially stable lifestyle doesnt have a problem paying for a legit copy. JMHO

erm..

another linux vs windows treat.. how lame.. easy fix would be to not put the bugs on the OS on the first place, then EVIL pirates who dont wanna pay $500 for a product that has more holes than swiss cheese dont need the patches

College Microsoft Freebies

I love my XP Pro. Cost me $5 100% legal through college contract with Microsoft. I also have multiple versions of Office and all development tools, which cost me nothing. None of the products have activation requirements. When I am going to leave college I just have to notify Microsoft a month or so in advance and the licenses for all the software I have will be mailed to me.

It's great to be in college.

I do know many people that pirate Windows, but they stopped doing it when XP was released because it is not as "bad" as prior versions so they feel it is worth paying for.

SEXIST statment!@@@

"that even if someone has pirated copy of Windows, it is more important to keep him safe than it is to be concerned about the revenue issue"

hmm.. that is a very sexist statment. I am not sure why they said "him". Are they saying only male users use windows?

HM.. interesting ... heheh.. just being picky

Insert Catchy title here

By distributing the patches to all users, they're helping to make the entire internet safer. Anybody with a little ambision can find a patch to bypass any antipiracy efforts anyway, so it's just a waiste of time on M$ part to try that trick again, it didn't work on sp1. but atleast now there may not be as many unpatched machines hooked to the net just distributing viruses and creating problems. If it wasn't for the fact that all the pc games & any decent apps only run on windoze, do you think people would pay so much for it?
