come on folks...
do you think you're gonna see 20 MBPS dsl to 18KFT on any ilec/rboc copper loops? ah, no. the rboc's are not spending money on copper like they used to. do you have any idea how much work it would be for the rboc's to condition pairs to handle that kind of linespeed? the sst's and outside plant techs would be doing nothing but removing load coils and bridge taps. then how the heck would they have time to roll out fiber....? gimme a break. of course, maybe this 20 MBPS gear's dsl signal is impervious to the normal limitations on dsl. maybe this new gear will run that new 20 MBPS dsl on 50 miles of barbed wire during an ice storm.
they are simply waiting for the fcc to give them the regulatory climate the bells want. that way the bells won't have to create the ftth fiber plant to replace the age old copper plant, only to have to share it with their competition.
the clec i work for has a hard enough time trying to get 2MBPS out to 18KFT. of course the nortel guy wants to sell his 20 MBPS gear; it's just going to have to be on ftth or a heck of a short copper loop!
| | | | Re: 'if the bells get out of their own way' Riiight, just let them run rougshod over the consumer and they'll improve their service. ..and the check's in the mail too. They'll say anything to get more up front stealing priveleges- then won't deliver on their promises. Make them pay UP FRONT by deploying first then being rewarded for it ONCE IT'S DONE. | |

| | 20 mb dsl - right sure 20mb dsl - Someone wake up please your still dreamin.
Sure the tech might be here, but it takes Verizon 3 or 4 years to move on decent technology. Do you see 3mb yet? Nope!
So having the tech is wonderful. But I don't think I'll hold my breath for it to be implemented. Verizon is fighting the regulation in hearings and, well, you can see its definitely not the customer who comes first. Its whether we can bill the customer for the highest fees without competition that matters most.
We won't see 20mb dsl for years if ever, because, quite frankly they don't give a crum for anything but your monthly bill.

They have no video, VoIP is coming fast, and cell phones will soon be as cheap as a home phone. Soon long distance will be a thing of the past.
Then you throw in a chip like this and all it means for (or to) the cables, cell phones and BPL. The Bells will quickly find themselves in a world of trouble. We will see some big changes in the next few years. If the Bells don't act now, they will soon be a junk bond.
