New Competition

Hopefully Verizon will present some healthy competition so that we can all start to see prices become lower.

Maybe if htey provide cable TV they won't put ads in the program menus like comcast does. In this respect, I love DirecTV.

VZ should be forced by the fcc to stick to phone service. At least until they build out what they already have been paid to do (Pennsylvania)!

Long Island?

I'm really curious to know the other 8 states. I'm hoping NY is one of them. Would be nice for a new cable company on Long Island. THey'd get people to switch very fast.

But can they?

Don't towns have to sign a 5-10 year exclusive contracts with cable companies that don't allow them to bring in competing services? If so, isn't it going to be hard for Verizon to break in? I don't like Verizon, but would love some competition in my town.

Nope, exclusivity agreements are illegal.

Not the first time...

Ameritech did this a few years ago in my area. Their "Americast" cable TV product was pretty good. They built a brand new network capable of handling all of the newest technologies, but never offered anything more than analog basic service!

Luckily, the sold off the franchise to WOW, who came in and started offering digital cable, Internet, and soon VoIP.

Getting Enough Fiber in your diet?

Ah Ha.........
So that's the reason I'm seeing all those Fiber install trucks and men everywhere.
I was wondering about that.

I was wondering what they had planned...

I live in Keller. Verizon was installing all the stuff and actually (it appeared so, I am far from an expert on Fiber) pulling the fiber in my already existing neighborhood. They tore the hell out of my neighbors yard, haha. I just hope this stuff goes active soon. I had Verizon DSL before I moved and bought this house in another area here in Keller and it rocked. YMMV.

Bring it already Verizon, I want to be done with Charter. I pay Charter 131.66 a month for DVR, Gold internet, basic expanded and HBO.

No kidding. Give back the $2 billion...or at least start these services in areas where they defrauded those taxpayers.

Man thats alot of money to pay a month.

jussomeguy

@taintedreality.org

I'd love to pay that per month for even just his net access..I am paying 109.95/month for 144/144 idsl, for comparison. Lets work on dsl distance before getting into cabletv, mmk? Just ~3,000ft should do it..

Re: But can they?

NOT TRUE!

Many cities still have them and are allowed to have them.

As long as the company is are "grand fathered" in the government won't buge especially if its a local cable company.

The city i live in had this. TWC tried for years to get in even tried to sue but it was thrown out of court. but the local company ended up selling to TWC so now we got them.

Also cities can stop companies for using their poles if they own them and pass laws to stop people and companies from digging like they have done in Duluth MN.

Pass laws that say companies can not use the poles on streets and dig holes to put in cable and you have it made.

Duluth pays an anti-trust fine every year but its not as near as what they'd lose if they'd let other companies come in with services they stop like Gas and other services that use cable under the ground

Also i have a friend that lives there.
