One of the main reasons I left BellSouth entirely almost a year ago.
They are loosing a number of customers due to the bundling. I know quite a few users that actually switched from DSL to Cox because they were moving from POTS to a cell phone only. -- Also find me at: Techware Labs & Sveasoft Forums |

I use DSL Extreme on Verizon's lines. I would love to ditch my land line, but wonder how this would work, being that I'm not using Verizon's DSL service. -- fRiTz+Nomad+ |

Give BellSouth sometime.. they want to make sure Verizon doesn't flunk in this area before they stick their noses in it. -- It is a man's own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways. |

I think before SBC could do this, they would have to swallow their pride and admit they they didn't want to offer DSL without a phone service. Not the "we can't give you DSL without dialtone" line of crap they are currently serving up. |

In December (2003) I finally got fed-up with Verizon's unwillingness to provide DSL sans dialtone service & cut the cord altogether going with cable + mobile phone only. I had been hesitant about the mobile-only voice issues but that's been OK. What hasn't been OK is Adelphia's cable-only service - so this is great news for me: I'm gonna see if I can get DSL-only here in Conway, NH. I've been harrassing Verizon to offer DSL-only service for years. |

I don't see CA listed as one of the 12 states that Verizon will allow dry pair DSL. -- It is a man's own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways. |

So if you already have a cell phone you cant get it, and unless you sign up for Verizon (which is expensive compared to other phone comps.) you cant get it. Not very naked, more like a DSL "mooning".
Not worth it with cell phone companies like cingular and sprint out there. Verizon wireless is not very popular in this area (from my experience atleast). -- I tie a rope around my penis and jump from a tree, don't you wanna grow up to be just like me!!!! |

No it's not, but should it become available...

This is not true. In an interview (somewhere... I gotta find it), they said that it wasn't required that you switch to Verizon Wireless. You could switch to ANY wireless carrier. They didn't mention VoIP, etc. |

The article says Verizon wireless, it doesnt make sense for them to allow switching to other wireless services. How would they even confirm it? And why would they care if you switch to Cingular or cancel POTS completly, that makes the same end result in their pocket book, zero:). -- I tie a rope around my penis and jump from a tree, don't you wanna grow up to be just like me!!!! |

Verizon allowing lost phone customers to stay online
Consumers in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, and residents of 10 other states, may keep their high-speed Internet service for $34.95 a month.
01:00 AM EDT on Friday, May 28, 2004
BY J. KYLE FOSTER Bloomberg News
Verizon Communications Inc., the biggest U.S. local-telephone company, is trying to retain customers in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, plus 10 other states, by allowing some of them to keep high-speed Internet service when they cut their phone lines and go wireless.
For the first time, Verizon customers in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maine, New Hampshire, Delaware, Maryland and Vermont who are moving their local-phone numbers to wireless devices can keep their high-speed Internet service, known as DSL or digital subscriber line, spokeswoman Briana Gowing said.
The offer is a departure for Verizon, which has sold its Internet access in a bundle to encourage customers to buy more services. New York-based Verizon, which has about 2.7 million DSL subscribers, has said it needs 4.3 million to make the business profitable. Competition is increasing as Comcast Corp. and other cable providers roll out digital phone service.
"We do believe standalone DSL is the right move for Verizon and the rest of the Bells," UBS Securities analyst John Hodulik wrote to clients, speaking of the companies remaining after the breakup of the Bell system. He rates Verizon shares "neutral 1."
Customers don't have to switch their numbers to Verizon wireless products, Gowing said. The standalone product is $34.95 a month.
"This for us is really about keeping that broadband relationship with the customer," spokeswoman Bobbi Henson said.
Shares of Verizon rose 68 cents to $35.08 yesterday in New York Stock Exchange composite trading.
Verizon, which sells local-phone service in 29 states and Washington D.C., hopes to make a broader offer of so-called naked DSL, Gowing said.
Right now, only local-phone customers in the 12 states can take advantage of Verizon's standalone service.
Verizon won't say how many customers are switching their local numbers to mobile phones or how many are buying the standalone Internet service.
The company's local lines fell 4.3 percent to 55 million in the first quarter. |
