Comments on news posted 2004-06-04 18:21:13: A long-standing issue with Windows XP and Wi-Fi is a seemingly random loss of wireless signal for no apparent reason, though the signal strength indicator shows a full signal. ..

Wireless is hard

The only time my XP machines lose their wireless connection is when we use the cordless phone. :/

Not going crazy after all

All this time I thought that I was going crazy... I have a couple of laptops that I can site right next to my AP or Router and there will be 100% signal strength then all the sudden XP says the connection was dropped, a couple of seconds later it comes right back. It is even worse if I have WEP enabled.

Wi-Fi Mystery Disconnects

To borrow a lyric from a Brooks & Dunn song...Deny, Deny, Deny. Our mothers taught us as children to be truthful. I don't condone bashing any OS maker, but a modicum of truth given to users goes a long way toward keeping those users. Most people will patiently wait if Microsoft has a problem, acknowledges it, and goes about fixing it. Sugar-coating, denying responsibility, or even worse, saying nothing, will only further alienate users of the Wireless Zero Configuration service.

It does happen

But not too often. I expect to see it "disappear" with a new patch...without any explaination or admission of cause.

Dude I feel your pain, I formated my laptop cause I was having the problem, and sure enough it came right back. I felt like a @#$@#% after all that, and backing up all my mp3's, and pirated divx movies just to waste time. It really sucks, but its M$.

Another thing that drives me crazy is when the connection is dropped, and it comes back up without an ip address, just the default 169 bullcrap, even though I have great signal. To fix this, it requires you to reboot, and cross your fingers.

Mine was flaky using the Win XP software.

I changed to the supplied Intel adapter software, all is good now.

I have had the same problem on my nephew' computer. His computer runs windows xp pro. It's just erratic and somewhat annoying. He doesn't use it too much, so it's one of the annoyances we deal with.

There are also issues with the zero wireless configuration if you have or do install software that came with the wireless card. XP doesn't like someone else's software for some reason. If you disable windows zero wireless, you're supposed to be able to use other software, but I don't believe it. I think it's still running somewhere in the background.

The funny thing is that my niece's computer (same room) has windows 2000, uses the software that came with the very same wireless card and never drops a bit. Never an issue.

I've always figured it was xp or something, but who wants to call Microsoft when there solution will always be to call the vendor.

Chipset compatibilty and drivers

I was annoyed by windows zero configuration. (What does zero stands for). I was forced to use it when crappy DLINK driver didn't work. Now I'm using Fujitsu Atheros driver and works OK, much better than windows zero and dlink.

Re: Wireless is hard

My buddy comes over to my house with his XP laptop that has built-in wireless. My laptop is running Win98 and a PCMCIA D-Link card.

The two laptops can be sitting right next to each other, mine streaming audio and video, his sitting in IRC, and he'll lose his connection randomly while mine hums along quite fine.

To me, that sounds like an XP driver problem.

Funny thing is, my D-Link signal strength indicator would sometimes say "Not connected" and yet I could still browse and stream.

.

What was aggravating me the most was not just the sudden loss of connectivity, but the inability for the laptop to properly request an IP address from the DHCP server after it happened.

At least this now explains why I could get a working connection some times and other times a non-working connection even though all the settings appear the same.

Dealing with this issue right now!

Dell Inspiron Laptop, new. Installed Linksys 54G card. Worked great for about 2 weeks. One morning the laptop gets turned on and it can't connect right away. Takes it over a minute, and it's on and off all day, all by itself. The activity LED on the PCCArd appears to have long gaps of no connectivity during large file transfers. Even if I turn off all security on my WRTG54S router and turn SSID on, the Dell Laptop only 'sees' an available signal part of the time, this all the while the laptop is 4 feet from the router.

I have been going crazy trying to troubleshoot this. GAD! Hope MS owns up to this, and offers a fix. BTW, this same card in a Win98se laptop is rock solid.

I don't like how the Windows Tablet PC driver makes WEP so difficult to implement. As a result, I can't run WEP on my access point because Windows won't let me enter the key. Hopefully no one will sniff out my MAC addresses lol.

Have you tried adjusting your channel to say 11 instead of 1? I hear that cordless phones run on the 1 channel, so change your wireless change with your software if you can.

As a netgear wireless user, I've known that wireless zero is a POS and needed to be turned off with help from ppl in the forums here.

So, if you go into the Services Manager and turn off the Wireless Zero Config service, and then make sure it is set to disabled on startup, does this solve the problem?

If you turn this off, how do you install and configure Wireless Adapters?

I'd like to know, since some guys in my office have XP notebooks that do this, and I finally gave up trying to figure out why, and just told them to live with it.

If it can be fixed, I'll be estatic.

I had a problem when I updaded window xp with the patch discussed in this intel document. I updated both the xp patch and the driver but still had the problem. Rolled back the update and the driver and no more problems.
