Not just broadband

Satoru Iwata hinted at something more at E3. THis was after he was talking about the DS. I just hope it isn't something stupid.

Broadband?

I don't think a lack of online play hurt the GC as much as a lack of GC exclusive games.

Hopefully the new secret plans are to actually release games for their new console....

MMMMM Hype

I'm waiting for a console rep to come out and say "Our next generation console will merely be adequate."

That way, their console will actually live up to the hype and won't disappoint. At least without trying really really hard.

Too little, Too late

The only way Nintendo will come up on top will the next round of consoles is if they forgo innovation and focus on shedding their kiddie image.

Their "new ideas" for entertainment will probably be something that's either not practical or used only by their company and not any third parties.

Re: Not just broadband

Hmmm, I would like to see a few improvements myself. Granted, it was a pretty cutting edge design on the GC but it came up a little short on a few key factors.

Sorry, but ATI just does not belong in a console system. But that is just an opinion. Don't hurt me too badly on that front.

Second: Just WHAT were they thinking; putting those mini DVD drives in those things? Why not put a full blooded DVD with movie playback in the unit?

Third: Loads of accessory slots and high speed bus architecture to put other consoles to shame! But no integrated Ethernet port? Well, nobody else really integrated it either. PS-2 and X-Box still require a "kit" to get online through your broadband.

Fourth: Really gritty, nasty, ugly action is still not on the GC. Nintendo has to drop the fear of marketability to children and families and give us titles with FANGS!

The list goes on, but these are my major sticking points with the current offering from Nintendo. Perhaps we will see a change for something a lot more robust in features and titles.

I hope they make it backwards compatable

Sony did a brillant move allowing the PS2 to work with PS1 applications adding a ton more worth to the new console.

Controller

As long as they put time and thought into making and designing the controller I'll be happy. The GC controller design is horrible.

Sorry, you'll have to qualify your opinion on this one. Why don't they belong in a console? I hope MS knows this since they [ATI] are doing the graphics for XBox 2. Besides that, ATI didn't even make the graphics processor for the Gamecube. A company called ArtX did. ATI bought them out shortly after the Gamecube started hitting production lines.

Piracy. And compared to MS and Sony, it is working quite well.

That is completely subjective. While first party titles retain the cutesy-pie feel, third party titles have all the blood and guts you could want. Resident Evil, Splinter Cell, Eternal Darkness, etc.

Nintendo missed the boat

While PS2 owners were busy playing SOCOM and Xbox owners were busy playing Live titles, Nintendo failed to realize that online playability was something that gamers wanted. Nintendo manufactured broadband and dialup adapters for Gamecube, but abandoned those peripherals completely. Instead, they focused on Gameboy-to-Gamecube adapters and gamers were able to unlock stupid features with this combo... what a complete waste of time. Gamecube had a lot of promise... Mario Kart, Tennis, Golf, Metroid Prime, Rogue Squadron all ONLINE ENABLED would've done some serious damage the past few years.

Shhh. The GC controller was supposed to be 'revolutionary' as well. I remember reading multiple articles glorifying the GC controller for its unique design that was going to change the way games were played.

The only thing they got right was the Wavebird concept.

Nintendo Sucks.

I am never buying a Nintendo console ever again. The last two I bought were terrible. N64 got so outplayed by the PS1. As for the Gamecube, it's the worst system ever made. Glad I finally got an Xbox.

Nintendo actually is NOT third place, Microsoft is

'tis true, Nintendo is second place and Microsoft is third in global console sales (though it's close) Personally, the GameCube was the first of the current consoles I bought, and I recently bought a PS2 - primarily for Dance Dance Revolution. If they had DDR on the GameCube, I probably wouldn't have bought it

The current GameCube has some major advantages - by far the most comfortable controller around, excellent graphics (an advantage the Xbox shares; the two are fairly close with the Xbox having a slight edge) compared to the PS2, and small portable size. The "kiddie" image and lack of DVD movie playback, along with coming a year later than the PS2 are what destroyed it. Personally I'm glad of the kiddie image - I don't want to play some violent nonsense. DVD movies? Well my PS2 plays them and my DVD player plays them and my computer plays them, do I really need ANOTHER DVD player? Nah. So I don't care even if the Revolution doesn't play them. I DO want to see DDR on the revolution, are you listening Konami?

Re: Nintendo missed the boat

In my eyes, nintendo seems to be in a product cycle which mirrors where Sega was when the dreamcast was released: almost a full design cycle behind.

It killed Sega and it will likely do the same for Nintendo's VGS if they can't send comparable product to market in the same product cycle as Microsoft and Sony. I'd really be worried about Nintendo if they didn't completely own the handheld gaming market. I don't see Sony taking that market away from Nintendo in the near future with the PSP (there are how many thousand gameboy titles available???) but Nintendo won't be able to survive on this platform alone.

Finally, I'd echo the first poster's comment and hope that a few more "adult" and "mature" level titles will be developed and published for Nintendo's new platform. I like the Mario games but every now and again I do like to play games like Halo, GTA, Hitman, etc...

Re: Controller

I love the GameCube controller. It doesn't hurt your hands like the Xbox controller (though the new "S" design helped that many many many times - it's now excellent also) and you don't have to reach in to the left analog stick like the PS2 controller.

i don't think most people give a damn where consoles stand globally, since we only live here in the US.

They are ALL great consoles in their own right. Some have advantages others do not and vice versa. As far as controllers go there will never be another as good as the ORIGINAL sony controller. It has stayed the same from PS1 until now. That's what Ive played with for 8 years and that's what I'm used to.Play with the Game cube controller for 8 years and try a sony.Square what?Triangle who?X why?Its all what you are used to."My son" has them all and they are great, like i said before,in their own right.I love the Hard Drive in the x box,Madden on PS2,and the fun puzzle games and Mario Parties on the cube. But all in all,GIVE ME THE PLAYSTATION"!!!!!!

SEGA

SEGA faced similar fate.
Their dreamcast.
That console was simply amazing.
It was long released before PS2 and offered top-of-the-line performance and options.
Too bad piracy killed it.
Now the company is almost non-existent.
Remember ATARI? They made first consoles (pong), then computers and now software.

The Future

I honestly don't see a future for Nintendo. Most of the original companies are gone, they are just delaying the inevitable. Nintendo will go down, they will be no more. Atari, and Sega both stopped producing consoles, they are now a software base only. I can see nintendo doing the same thing. Natural Selection will decide this ultimatly.

The next generation players are microsoft and sony.

Xbox and PS2 does what Nintendon't!

Nintendo has been going downhill for years. They push Mario, Donkey Kong and Zelda too hard. Also, I think the "clean" cut image hurt Nintendo, too.

The last Nintendo system I had was the Super Nintendo. I think it is about time for Nintendo to exit the console market and focus on software production outside of freaking Zelda, Mario and Donkey Kong.

Side note: Did you guys know that Nintendo dropped Sony's CD-ROM add-on to the 16-bit Super Nintendo (or was that the 8-bit NES?) in a last minute move? Sony laughed all the way to number one because that CD-ROM add-on became Play Station I.
