| RIAA can byte me! first off, im no official rep for shoutcast. nor will i probabably ever be. but i have been in the shoutcast industry for a few years now. as far as im concerned, the RIAA can just byte me. most of the stations on shoutcast pay well into the thousands of dollars every month just to keep ASCAP, BMI, and RIAA off their ass. also, a few unsigned stations have popped up lately that play nothing but sans-label bands, which the RIAA should not be panicking about.
as well, not only the staff of nullsoft (creators of shoutcast), but about 90% of the broadcasters/listeners/forum members (including myself) are against piracy and DO take steps to prevent it like crossfading songs, intro/outro voiceovers, and even ip/subnet banning amongst others.
i dont know about you, but digital radio (if we are all assuming internet here) is the least of the RIAA's worries. shoutcast is really the only internet radio protocol that is free (the program is free, bandwidth is not) and is commonly used by hobbyist's even just for small broadcasts to play with it. any others like real and windows media do require payware software and some of the broadcast providers ive seen for these protocols do require some sort of licesnsing or atleast acknowledgement that you are paying licensing fees.

As for MP3s, I have seen 1200kbps songs during the Napster days, too bad I had dial-up at the time.

| FOCUS and Follow The MONEY... Guys and Ladies, Beating up on the RIAA de-focuses you from the real culprits and real issue. The RECORD labels like Sony, RCA, Bertellsman etc. are the culprits. The talking heads at the RIAA do nothing without the guidance and consent of the Recording Labels. In effect the RIAA is just a front outfit. FOCUS on the Labels. Drive a boycott of any purchases of ANY music media. The second the store owners see their stores EMPTY they'll pressure the Labels to tell the RIAA to back off. All the comments here are fine and good but until the pressure is applied economically at a strategic pressure point you might as well go piss into a Hurricaine. | |

| The AVATAR sez it all... What a bunch of pilfering grab-asses. If the RIAA wants to do some good, perhaps i should start turning in the brothers down the street that have so much stereo packed into their cars that i can FEEL their music from a block away. According to the RIAA, that's illegal ya know...cuz they are broadcasting loud enough for me to hear it... -- Don't sweat the petty things, and never pet the sweaty things... | |

| The RIAA exposed... Come on. Suppose every radio station in America switched to a type of digital broadcast from which perfect digital copies could be made, at will. The RIAA member companies would still be doing everything in their power to get their songs on to radio (including payola in all its various forms). Why? Because their sales will nose dive without the exposure offered by radio. Its better for them to have their songs on the radio, even with the ability to pirate, in exactly the same way it would be better for them to have their songs on Kaaza or any other file sharing network if radio didn't exist at all. | |
