Comments on news posted 2004-06-16 12:22:20: In what has become both curious and creepy, users in our Security forum have been reporting that ZoneAlarm has been inexplicably "phoning home" to the BroadbandReports servers, apparently looking for updates. ..

DNS corruption

I know Akamai's DNS servers got hit with some sort of attack the other day - could this be related? A corruption in DNS cache on their end, or on the user's machines that are experiencing the problem?

For an end user who's having the problem - what happens if you run an ipconfig /flushdns and reboot? Any change?

Re: DNS corruption

I don't know... Mine was doing this as early as the 1st of June, and that was before they reported the issues. Also, mine does not try to get to broadbandreports, rather dslreports. Why would that happen?

Do you normally access the site via dslreports.com or broadbandreports.com?

dslreports. Is it just using the cache on the system to resolve it?

Beats me, i'm just a Civil Engineer..LOL.

But it just seems to me that this sort of thing would point more toward a local issue as opposed to a DNS/Akamai thing as others are theorizing--or perhaps a combination of the two.

Re: DNS corruption

All I know is that it was doing it at the start of the month, before they reported the issue. The oddity is that when you close za, and then reopen it, it will stop doing it, then arbitrarily just start up again a few hours later.

Explanation from Zonelabs taken from security foru

Explanation from Zonelabs taken from security forums.

Every little bit of communication between the ZoneAlarm clients (by which I mean all those products with ZoneAlarm anywhere in their name) and any Zone Labs server is under the complete control of the user. There are various servers that the clients connect to for different purposes: pa2.zonelabs.com for the Program Advisor, avu.zonelabs.com for the Antivirus Update server, etc. So any time there is ANY connection to Zone Labs listed in the log, it's because a certain feature, like AV monitoring or "Check for Update" is turned on. Again: each one of these features can be turned off.

Now, this issue has come to a head over the weekend, because some of these servers had to be taken offline for maintenance. This caused some clients to attempt over and over again to connect. We will be adjusting the frequency of those reconnection attempts, so this shouldn't be an issue that will be so alarming-looking if we ever take the servers offline again.

We're sorry about the confusion this caused. Again: there is NO unauthorized communication happening from clients, and any communication can be disabled.

Re: Explanation from Zonelabs taken from security

That doesn't explain why it's trying to connect to our servers.

Re: *shrug*

Well, in all honesty I will stick with Kerio 2.15 I see really no other firewall that I need besides it at this point. How can you guys even compare Zone alarm to Kerio for that matter? With Kerio you control what is going in and out, bottom line!

Ditch the ZoneAlarm newbie firewall and go with something a little more advanced such as Kerio 2.15

Nuff said

And come on, comparing windows firewall to Kerio? There is no comparison, Kerio eats the windows firewall for lunch and then spits it back out and laughs.

Come on guys, you guys that know about packets, filtering, networking protocols and the such should be able to see that Kerio or Outpost is by far superior to windows firewall for Zone Alarm.

Zone Alarm is meant to be a newbie firewall, simple at that. Remember that next time you get hacked and you wish you installed and was running a hardware firewall or Kerio with proxomotron.

Re: *shrug*

Nobody is trying to make you use what you don't want to. Stop posting messages about what you think someone else should use and let the folks that WANT to use ZA figure out their problems.

Re: *shrug*

I didn't get the impression that someone else was trying to make me use something else. I am just making a comment that you can't compare zone alarm or windows firewall against Kerio or a few other firewalls.

It just gets old when you see posts at how great those two firewalls are when in all reality there not THAT great.

In fact, I posted this in the wrong place anyway I believe, oh well, I guess sh*t happens sometimes eh?

That is VERY interesting, because that URL is broken. The :80 indicates port 80, but that should be before the /checkupdate.asp path, not after it! Seems their software is handling the URL wrong. You should post that shot in the Security forum if you haven't already. It's a dead giveaway, ZoneAlarm has some kind of bug in the URL handling.

pirated copys

Could this be because of pirated copies of Zone Alarm? Perhaps they have a trojan in them or key logger that calls out, And the writer just happens to have a sense of humor and likes Dslreports.

what better place for an ad

any coincidence that there are 3 ZA Pro ads from Google at the bottom of the page?

Re: what better place for an ad

Google AdSense reads the page and puts in contextual ads. The ads are there because ZoneAlarm is mentioned on the page.

answer to phone

Close ZoneAlarm.
Open up your registry editor.
Go to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm
In the right pane, you will see CfgMain, double click that.
Use your keyboard's arrow keys to downwards until you reached 0028.
On line #6 (0028), press the right arrow key 5 times, then hit Backspace.
After you are done the step above, type 00 on your keyboard.
Then click OK.
Restart ZoneAlarm...
