Bell Canada also runs their own 802.11b Wi-Fi access hotspots in Canadian cities (called Access Zone and Zone D'Acces), including roaming hotspots on VIA Rail trains along the Montreal-Toronto corridor.

$101.73 at Provantage. Must order and it is dropshipped, not stocked.

It works with PPPoA, PPPoE, 1483, ETC.

Re: Smypatico does this with an Efficient 6300 Gat

It's not a Zoom, it is a Siemens Efficient Speedstream.

Wifi

I run a Wifi Router and share my connection but only with MY computers. Why should anyone wish to share their net access with others, whien they don't know what they are doing. What if your wireless partner were downloading illegal content, since you provided the connection you would be responsible for the content, and the legal fees if a lawsuit came about.

Here is where Bellsouth is on this, from this very site a few months back:

»BellSouth Offers Free Wi-Fi

And here is a link to the hotspots.

»contact.bellsouth.com/wifi/venues.asp

This is a trial, but if it works out well, I would expect ti to be expanded. Probably not in smaller cities, but into most of the larger ones.

Re: All the bells???

The article is not about Hotspots, but about DSL CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) that has Wireless included.

Unless I've read it wrong.

An attempt to beat competition?

This actually has a couple fronts.
1. The more 802.11 access points that are deployed the more interference that is caused in the 2.4ghz bands, often a band wireless internet service providers use.

2. Cable has yet to give away routers, most just "loan" the modem out.

3. Small providers cannot do this. The whole "line sharing" effect means that the small guys are already paying the telco for the line. Then the telco offers service for less than the guys who are using the line plus throw in extras. No doubt also an effort to get rid of those pesky little guys sharing there lines (by law).

Whats next? Free Television when you sign up for a year of the "bundled" Dish, DSL and Telephone service.

Free Television when you sign up for a year of the "bundled" Dish, DSL and Telephone service.

thats a crazy bundle, but it could happen. Some providers *comcast* make you take useless services to get broadband. And Comcast is not alone it that. If you dont have access to Naked DSL you are stuck with paying extra for stuff you dont need or dial-up. Damn I forgot I have to pay for teh phone line if I get Dial-up.... we go round and round.
