2nd post, silly.
Doubleclick delivers ad-content, yes? I'm not so sure that I'd personally classify it as "adware".

1 edit | Doubleclick installs a program on your machine or messes with the registry? I don't count cookies as adware, because even the site I'm posting this on uses them. Cookies are a timesaver.
And if I'm going to see ads, I'd much rather see ads for servers, or cars or baseball (or something) than ads for tampons or womens clothing.

I wish they would be upfront and honest about it instead of burying it in the TOS.

| Sooner or later he's not going to have a choice Look it's simple, if you are that irate about cookies, ads, pop ups and the like, get a life, go outside and never go back on the internet.
Almost every ISP (infact ALL ISP's) have some for of advert on their websites...often times those adverts are placed by 3rd party ad services companies....you can run and hide from these folks but you will never really get away.
Now the question is what ISP is this idiot moving to? I'll bet his life isn't going to be any better no matter where he moves to.

Wrong on count one. Unless you see an ad here that I'm missing...it's all for the ISP (My ISP, in fact)
So by your rules, if a giant cockroach emerges from your computer every time you use the internet, and the ISP has this condition buried in their AUP, that would be okay?
Come on. | |

| The whole web page is an add for the ISP, there isn't ONE ISP webpage out there that doesn't have adverts on it.
Heck it's got a BIG VOIP banner add on the right, CALL NOW!
SO again I'm right on all counts there isn't an ISP that doesn't have ad's and a lot of them are gonna dump cookies...sooner or later, in fact a lot SOONER, the guy is going to be out of ISP's to go to.

| I don't have a choice as long as Sprint has a deal with Earthlink. Sure I can go to cable but it is not as good as Sprint DSL. I can even go to satellite but again, not as good. I was hoping that Sprint would do a BYOI, but it looks like that will never happen.
As I said earlier on another post, I don't have a problem with it as long as I am in control. It's when that control is taken away from me, that's when I will have a problem with it. When Earthlink starts to prevent me from blocking the ads, that's when I will raise holy hell.

@dsl.gen
| you guys are confusing issues
Earthlink's software gives you a *choice* to *disable* adware cookies from doubleclick (and many others), *for good*. Which means you'll still likely see ad banners from double click, because they're everywhere, but cookies they try to set will be ignored/thrown-away by the browser. This will result in those advertisers not being able to compile data about which sites you've been to.
I've enabled this feature in the past thru using the Total Access Toolbar, and launching the spyware detector. It will offer you to disable many things, among which are those pesky cookies.
Once you've done that, you should not be getting cookies being set by doubleclick when browsing webmail or other portal applications, regardless of which site you go to. You'll still see the ad banners, your browser just won't be storing any cookies doubleclick when it attempts to set them. They'll just get thrown away.
Earthlink would not do anything effective to protect your privacy from doubleclick by simply refusing to place their ad banners on their sites. Because as soon as you go to *ANOTHER* site, guess what, 90% chances are it'll have doubleclick ad banners.
The only relevant course of action to protect privacy regarding cookies being set by advertisers such as doubleclick is to *DISABLE* those cookies, which is *precisely* what earthlink lets you do thru their Total Access software.
I hope this clarifies things a bit.

| more than one OK, it's not adware or spyware, but unfortunately Verizon has a bad record of spamming its subscribers. Despite indicating preferences for NOT receiving "special offers," they will continue to send their subscribers everything from SOHO router to concert ticket sweepstakes offers. I guess what they have sent me in their eyes is not supposed to be special offers, although I'd love to know just as what they would have classed those emails. -- English is a difficult enough language to interpret correctly when its rules are followed, let alone when a writer chooses not to follow those rules. | Whatever
Text files people, they are just text files.
I don't really care if they 'try' to track me, I just clear my cookies once a week and I lose them.
Now if they tried to install gator/CWS/lop then yeah he would have a reason to be mad, but come on cookies? even broadbandreports.com (the google ads the free accounts see) uses them
Let me ask you this.
Do you have a credit card? Do you have a bank account? Do you have a drivers licence? Do you have a passport? Do you own a car? Have you ever gotten a speeding ticket? Have you ever sent an email? Have you ever used an ATM machine?
Relax people, all the cookies can get is your browser, your IP (which BTW any site you visit gets anyway) and the sites you visit and this only if you visit a site with the same advertiser. It is inert text at any other site.
Just remember to clear them out at least once a week;) -- Because Goldengamegod won't fit:p
