Comments on news posted 2004-07-15 15:04:56: Once a dominant player in the p2p game, Kazaa has effectively been a victim of its own success; targeted by the RIAA, and made chubby from the revenues their spyware loaded software provided. ..

Everyone needs to just switch to IRC.

I suspect lots more would if it wasn't for the pompous attitude of many IRCers.

lamentable

BT seems to me to be such a good system, and distributes some of my favorite (and perfectly legitimate) things...like Fedora Core. I'd hate to see some entity like the {RI,MP}AA squash BT and take down FC as collateral damage.

"IRC > *" is a great example of pompous attitude...

I use both IRC and BitTorrent quite regularly and together I get what I want. Kazaa was nice for like single mp3s, but not much else.

IRC requires you to beg for uploads, wait for queues.BT and Kazaa Lite doesn't have long queues and can hit near max speeds almost instantly if there is sufficient upload bandwidth.

I'm a BT supporter.Yeah!

Just wait

Just wait until the RIAA/MPAA(sp?) Start targeting BT more. Then people are going to star coming here and complaining and be like, "OMG, how'd they get my IP man?" sorta like the stuff going on with comcast and there letters they send out.

I personally hate going on BT, it's much more public then I want it to be, but then again it's like most P2P clients, they need to broadcast your IP so you can receive the file.

If you're going to pirate, at least take into consideration you might get caught.

Re: IRC > *

What I meant was the seeming unwillingness of veteran IRC users showing newbies the ropes.

As to the title, IRC has a huge advantage on all current p2p programs, the anonymity factor.

I do still use *za programs, they're much easier to use.. that's their draw.

IRC takes a certain amount of dedication to be able to find what you really want.

Would you show me the ropes?

I've been getting Fedora through the mirrors, maybe I should give BT a try. Anything more than 4k/s would be welcomed

May be a silly question....but

Can BT be socksified to work through a SOCKS 4/5 Proxy? I haven't seen anyone mention this approach and thought it could work.

IRC is very simple.. Its just hard for people to grasp you can download files using a chat program. This site gives all the help a newbie could ever need..

It's my ball and you can't play

It is true that there is a "I was here first go away" attitude on IRC.KInd of like the NIMBY thing.

It isn't that type of attitude I would say goes on on IRC, but I wouldn't recommend people go on it, especially newbies.

Re: IRC > *

I personally feel that IRC shouldn't be experiencing those "growths" that kazaa and BT are getting (or in some cases, had gotten :P ).

How I feel IRC should be kept is closed off from the "normal" users, so that there's a place for people like me to go and hangout without drawing too much attention. Then again that's my weirdo elitist complex or something. I'm sure someone will flame me for that.
