Comments on news posted 2004-07-16 13:34:20: It's hard not to be envious when you see Japan deploying 100Mbps fiber connections for a measly $41, while regulatory battles, geography, and a lack of ample competition keep American broadband relatively slow, expensive, and under-deployed. ..

| pcause join:2000-07-13 Burlington, MA | I work for a Japanese broadband supplier.. I work for one of the folks providing this kind of service in Japan. It is more than just the broadband speed. There is a complete VoIP network and people are delivering TV signal over ADSL. There is a lot more and I think Japan is "real" broadband, while the US is just fast dial up.
The answer is that we are falling way behind. People who live in this environment will see new business and technology opportunities. They will create the products and services that drive and own the products and services that will win in this environment. This kind of environment will be here in the US in 3-6 years, bu by then the winners will all be Japanese or Korean and the US technical and tech business edge will be further eroded.
It was our technical edge and the jobs it created and the efficiencies that we could take first advantage of that had us the leaders in the 90's up until today. The advantage and edge could and will swing to Japan is we don't have this environment in the US for 3-6 years.
The thing to remember is that 2 orders of magnitude change in the environment has *always* proven to be disruptive to existing technology suppliers, business models and market leaders over the last 30 years. Japanese broadband is 2 orders of magnitude better than US. It will disrupt their businesses, they will adapt, develop the new technology and we will just be followers and customers.
| | 1 edit | Re: I work for a Japanese broadband supplier.. i agree with pcause. its also weird because about 2-3 years ago, when america already had regular dsl, japan started introducing adsl. its funny to see how that became so fast, faster than america. i think the main reason y its so slow in america is because theres just too many customers. in america, 9/10 people probably have dsl. in japan, 5/10 people dunt even have a computer! they mostly use their cellphones to email and wutknot. i knoe, cuz everybody i see use their cells here... theyre also advanced in cellphones.. maybe 2-3 years more advanced. | |

But we price it out of feasibility, because somebody needs to get paid. The USA utilizes less than 20% of the installed fiber capacity - dark fiber abounds.
Big business has done it's share to stymie progress...maybe it's time to get these guys out of government? -- Out the 100Base-T, past the firewall, through the router, down the cable bus, over the leased line, off the bridge...nothing but Net.
| | | AOL help Please OK this started about 2 weeks ago, I connect to aol throught my cable, I have a 3 meg speed. Well about 2 weeks ago i noticed when i get on aol that sending email and sending an instant message took forever to send, When sending an email it was takin a minute to sometimes over a minute to send, So i tried to use AIM to send instant messages, Nope still SLOW!!! So i called aol, they told me to uninstall and reinstall aol, did that still nothing changed, so they told me to purge the art work, Again did that and nothing changed, So i then reformatted my whole computer and reinstalled aol again, still nothing, Then aol told me it was my cable company and my speed was not right so thats whats keepin me from connection to aol. So i called the cable company ( charter) Nothing wrong on there end my speed is great sometimes runs over 3 megs.. I do not dial up to aol and have checked the settings and its connecting to my isp/cable web pages load fine i can do anything on aol, just when it comes to sending an email or instant message on aol its slow, and even on AIM sending a message is slow. I can log onto aol.com and check my email there and send and its fast. So i called aol again they told me well we dont know whats wrong nothing here on our end just when you want to send email or talk to someone use aol.com.. yeah right i pay monthly for aol if i wanted to use aol.com through my internet explorer i would cancel, its bad and i have no idea what to do about this, 2 weeks now almost 3 and still aol can not help me out, i have done everything and nothing is working, Just wondering if any of you have another suggestion as to what i can do, I really hate to cancel the aol because that right now is my only i keep in contact with my sister in iraq, but its a pain to have to wait over a minute to send an email, not only to her but to other aol memebers.. Now what can i do??? Please help!!!
