| Price is right On the comment above on 420,00... Thats assuming the company is recouping its cost immediately. Realistically, they would prob have a higher price for fewer homes... Or launch in a big city where 2 miles covers large scales. Second many foreign countries offer home 10 and 100mbits for less than what the average American pays for their lines.. The fact that companies are giving some limited attempts is good, but still a shame. It's not that they couldn't make plenty of money giving home users unlimited 10/10 lines.. its the fact that the government chooses not to invest in spreading broadband. The countries that current have those 10s and 100s at home have had their governments look at the potential to wire homes, and see the need to invest. Yes big corporations are bad, but the reality of the matter, you are paying to a big coroporation for what you got now. I mean come on.. How many mom and pop shops are offering dsl / cable.. Not many that i can think of... The fact of the matter, it comes to greed.. Companies in the USA, which we are a capitalist society, want to turn over the biggest buck for the least expenditure. Hence, while other countries are wiring it up, ISPS have capped users, lower bandwidth, or in some cases, raise prices by claiming higher cost... If verizon ever does offer that 30/5 or 15/2.. you can bet it will be with a very low cap. | |

| Great news, great prices Kudos to Verizon for being a FTTH pioneer. These large-scale deployments will make it easier for others to follow. | |

| Online gaming Hah, Boston doesn't get it because they spent all their money on the underground interstate! Bergen County is the richest county in NJ. Very fitting, especially after hearing about Keller's demographics. How about Seattle, right next to the evil empire? Are we in hose-ville, much like Silicone Valley? | |

| FTTH being installed in Silver Spring MD
Just got done talking with a verizon construction dude putting Fiber splice boxes through the Northwood C.O. serving area (Silver Spring, MD). He expects to have the job done within a few weeks and expects VZ to start offering Fios to my neighborhood by years' end.
I cant wait to get better speed for same $ or less than I get now. Also wouldn't mind dumping DirecTV for a landline service. But don't offer me any Comcast service. THeir local service just sucks.

| Re: FTTH being installed in Silver Spring MD Fiber optics was indeed installed in my area (Kemp Mill) about 2 1/2 months ago. However I cannot find out when the higher speed will be operational. The service is known as FIOS and there is a web site for it. If I put my telephone number 301 6499870 into the qualifying tool at the web site I am told that I do not qualify. Based on other peoples comments this is supprising. Please feel free to contact me for further details on the subject.

| Fiber in my front yard! Just saw the flags and note on my door in Highland Village (Lewisville) Texas for fiber to be run next to the street in front of my house. Entire neighborhood has flags and lines painted indicating the fiber run. I live in a suburb of Dallas and we're probably 30 miles from Keller, Texas which is a suburb of Fort Worth.
I was really surprized to see the flags and construction notice because I'm 17000 feet from the CO and barely get DSL over copper where I'm at.
So what ever is being said about Verizon's plans - I can tell you THEY ARE ACTUALLY DOING IT.

| Verizon Fiber in PA? I'm currently in the bleeding edge class. I'm near Phila. in Phoenixville just west of Valley Forge PA.
Abandoned Verizon landline and DCAnet DSL for Phonom combined DSL/VoIP $65/month package. But they only have 960 MBPS service in my central office; not ADSL2. If they had ADSL2, based on my distance from the CO, I could have 4 MBPS DSL service from them.
Comcast is bloody headquartered here in the Philly area, but they are so expensive and were so rude to me when I called to inquire about service that I went with DISH Network and got a DVR (almost as good as TiVo, but my unit has no monthly fee). Of course, the satellite people will never have enough bandwidth to do true video on demand like Comcast offers.
Verzion has been promising fiber for years. The PUC allows rate increases. No Fiber.
These days, they're busy building McMansions on most of the remaining square feet of forest and farm here in (formerly) bucolic Chester County PA. I began to see lots of Verizon trucks, and I thought they were pulling new cables to the new homes. But trucks began appearing in downtown Phoenixville which is full of old homes. Could it be fiber I wondered?
I live at a corner near a utility pole on a main route from the local Central Office. When I arrived home from work yesterday, I noticed that Verizon had stopped mid-way through a job, and left a large plastic junction box strapped to the side of the pole at eye level. I wandered over and inspected the cable going into the box. It read:
CORNING FIBER CABLE
Here's my theory. A recent FCC ruling says that unlike the copper pair to each home, the RBOCs do NOT have to share (wholesale resell) new technology like fiber. Thus, if Verizon puts in fiber, they are not required to wholesale it to companies like Covad. They're loosing landline residential busines to cable + VoIP and cellular, and even to things like Phonom (Phonom gives me DSL without underlying POTS telephone service, then I use VoIP on top; no taxes due to a probably temporary regulatory loophole). Plus, Verzion has finally woken up to realize that telephone service is just a form of data service. That's where the world is moving. They need to compete with the cable companies, etc. Video, of course, is just another form of data service too.
Wham. As soon as the FCC rule / regulation / whatever when through, they begin laying fiber. They're serious.
There are many questions, of course.
What will the rates be here in PA? As reported elsewhere? Will they requrie underlying POTS service, or can I buy Verizon (or Lingo or Vonage or Phonom VoIP)?
And the big question: whether Verizon will ramp up video service quickly as well, or hold back. They might hold back to avoid "biting off more than they can chew." They might hold back to wait until they have sufficient installed base of real broadband enabled residences to support the venture. Or they might hold back to avoid getting political pressure through the PUCs and FCC from Comcast friendly people. Or maybe they're not planning video.
This should be interesting!
It will mean the demise of companies like Covad and probably Phonom (which is based on sister company Cavalier Telephone DSL) which rely on RBOC local loops. You'll have only the regulated two competitors par market: the historical cable company and the historical phone company, both selling broadband + services on top (VoIP, Video).
Still, finally real competition for cable companies!

| why the asymmetric The speeds are asymmetric because they're using a technology called APON (ATM Passive Optical Networks) or GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Networks). This uses what they call an OLT (optical line terminal) at the Central office/headend/aggregation point, and ONT (Optical Network Terminal) at your hose. The OLT can vomit bandwidth by broadcasting downstream...up to almost 622 Mb/s. All the ONT's receive the broadcast, but dump all the info not destined for it...and no, you can't hack into your neighbors traffic without having the resources of a country behind you...they've never been able to crack it in the labs. However, back upstream from your house, your ONT uses TDM (time division multiplexing) technology, which means it has to wait its turn to transmit back upstream to the OLT in the central office, in line with all your neighbors. The OLT broadcast downstream to your trailer park and the ONT TDM transmission upstream occur simultaneously but are non-blocking because they operate on different optical wavelengths. Whoever the provider is, they can also transmit video down to your measly existence by broadcasting it at a third frequency. | |

I've been watching Verizon install our Fio for the past month. I was told today, 11/5/04, that we should be getting our offers to hook up to the service by sometime in December. I can't wait to experience Directv service through that fat pipe! Dual tuners for everyone!! Not to mention the possibility of 30mbps internet throughput. -- BF1942 Clan (Join Us!) | DFW Speaks Out
