"Filling the pipe" is the easiest part when creating a new network. If they don't want to build a WiFi network maybe it's because they find out it would not be advantageou$. -- Jesus saves, but only Buddha makes incremental backups. |

I've got my Internet access by an ISP wich is cable company. It's the same pattern for Earthlink; they could own the network feeding their customers. They could build a national WiFi network and "fill" it with their backbone. -- Jesus saves, but only Buddha makes incremental backups. |

You build a tollway OK? -- and I'll whine when you balk about me expecting to get wholesale access to your tollway so I can make some money -- on your tollway! Maybe I'll get the govmt. to pass a law that says you must let me profit on your tollway! Now go build a lot of spiffy tollways so I can make some money! We really need the tollways -- so I'm sure you'll want to do the right thing eh? |

| Build a Pipe and They will Come!
This is an easy enough premise. The bottle neck is the Last Mile. To me the best solution is Fiber, yes WiFi and all the rest will still be there for a long time, but the only Pipe that can handle everything is Fiber. Networks will be the way of the future, and granted all technologies will be used, but mark my words, Fiber now is the backbone and will also be the biggest Pipe used for that Last Mile.

| mindspring was my very first internet provider with a max speed of 24000.
had to cancel earthlink account after downloading some el reporting software, changed my mind, didn't think it was cool for auto reports being reported back to isp
couldn't uninstall, "you don't have ownership of file or files"
had to reformat drive
i guess that provided me with a important lesson never install isp software
and earthlink sucks
never had a problem with mindspring until earthlink came along
never forget! |

Directv and DishNetwork outsource jobs too. Yet no one seems to complain. So why pick on Earthlink? |

They could, but they really couldn't and Sunburn 's statement is a valid one. The trend is toward a further division, not union, of connectivity & server-account services.
One of the reasons residential internet providers have mostly sucked is that *everything* about being a good infrastructure build & maintain organization is fundimentally contrary to being a good acct services provider (financing, geo-location, skill set, management of workers, yadayada). In a deregulated environment the customer benefits when they are separate. A lot. |

Just to be a devil's advocate, why don't those with dedicated lines move to lineshare? Its been good for me and I don't have many problems. For some reason, those with dedicated lines don't want to make the leap.
That's their choice. |

Earthlink has a lot more than 5 million customers I can garruantee you that. However thier continuing movement of outsourcing jobs to other countries has resulted in a large overall dcrease in customer satisfaction especially when it came to hold times and taking care of the customers. I can't say much more due to confidentiality agreements. But under my own opinion even after working for earthlink sales for a year. I would never use them as a internet provider unless it were free or really cheap I'd never call thier support line unless it was a last possible ditch effort or to cancel which would still take at least 20 minutes then another 10-15 minutes of them lying to me over the phone even when I was working for the company. |

it's amazing how many of you people don't know what earthlink does. Yes they are a middle man of sorts, but they provide a 'service' some companies provide actual goods, such as the telephone lines, the electrical generators which supply power, etc.. but services are also very important. Last time I check earthlink newsgroups are 2nd only to verizon, and recently verizon took away ps2 groups. Earthlink gives you email, web etc.. yes i know verizon or timewarner does the same thing, but try thinking of it this way. Verizon has 2 departments. 1 handles the actual line and connectivity and another handles the 'service'. Earthlink is competing with this service and not the part which provides the actual connection. |

I remember back in 2001, when Earthlink still had the Save Desk in Atlanta, it took me over 2 hours (I was at work and had my speaker phone on) to get to an agent who could cancel my service, which incidentally was so bad about disconnecting I had to use a friend's BellSouth Dot Net dial up account just to get anything downloaded.
I told the rep I was going with DSL, and he told me he would give me 2 months of free dial up. Yeah, right. |

I ditched EarthStink after piss poor service from reps in both the Philippines (customer service) and in India (tech support). Neither case did I speak to a sole in the U.S. and neither could think beyond their phone scripts.
When I called to cancel my service, the rep REFUSED to document my reason: outsourcing! I tried several times, but he kept trying to steer me toward other issues (e.g., I moved, simply wanted another provider, didn't like the service, etc.). With reps REFUSING to document the number of users fleeing from bad foreign outsourcing, the executives certainly cannot have all the facts and figures about the impact of their outsourcing decision.
