Faster DSL's and WHY NOT?

Was a time NLC in Rohnert Park, CA, was trying to implement VDSL, and actually did testing in Midwest and Arizona (please correct me if I am in error. I seem to remember speeds to 50+Mbps and distances way over DSL.)
I was @ 22,500' at 1106kbps thru SBC (Boulder Creek, CA 95006) in 2001, 5 YEARS AGO!.
Although I never had any problems, SBC stopped installs over 12,000'!
Sad thing is AT&T undergrounded fiber optic farther out than that 2 years before that and IT STILL IS NOT BEING PUT TO USE!
See »www.newnetworks.com/ShortSCANDALSummary.htm and
»www.newnetworks.com/broadbandscandals.htm for more info on foot dragging by SBC et al.
I see the UK is now implementing ADSL2 and ADSL2+.
Any comments?
