| Another possible bypass method... The description of this device in the 2nd link (»www.smarthome.com/9620.html) also states that the device operates off of 2 AAA batteries, so... What if the kids just unscrew the 2 allen screws and remove one or both of the batteries??
This just reminds me of a baseboard-mount phone jack I saw at Walgreens for the first time a few years ago (actually one of my local Walgreens still carries them in stock)... except it had a keylock on it. Never understood that one either, all you had to do was remove one screw and bypass it.
If someone does opt to buy one of these, I would suggest squirting a healthy amount of liquid security seal over the 2 screws; at least that way you would be able to tell if someone attempted to remove the screws. Just remember to hide the tube of security seal after you use it.
Better yet the maufacturer of this device should come out with an updated version that has a lockable cover that shields the entire bottom half of this device, that way the cords and the bottom screw would be locked in from any tampering.
A little off topic, but it reminds me of a someplace I used to work at about 12 years ago. I was an assistant manager for a retail store that also had a district manager's office located in the back of the building. We had an older demarc box in the back room that had four lines coming into it; a voice line for our store, a voice line for the DM's office, a dedicated line for dial-up computer access for our store, and one for the DM's office. The only lines that had long-distance service on them were the 2 line dedicated for voice calls. We were allowed to make long-distance calls during business hours as they were most likely business related calls, but we were to make no long distance calls after store hours. If we did, we were sent a copy of the phone bill and had to send in payment to our regional office to cover the calls made & it could also result in a written write up in your employee file. However, long distance calls were not monitored by the accounting department on District Manager's voice lines. So I had a homemade cable in my briefcase that had a phone jack on one end and two alligator clips on the other end. Whenever I wanted to make a personal long distance call after closing the store, and no one was in the DM's office, I simply walked to the back room with one of our spare desk phones and used the alligator clips to tap into the DM's voice line back at the demarc box. I only did this maybe two or three times a month, for maybe a total of no more than two hours of long distance calls in any given month; but it just proves that there's pretty much always a way to circumvent anything that someone comes up with. | |

Some interesting comments. I developed the LineLok after raising 3 teenage daughters. It is easy to say you will take the phone out every night or yank the modem or smash the computer. The LineLok is intended as a non-confrontational aid to parenting. Agreed it can be bypassed by an enterprising kid,interestingly we have not had one complaint regarding this though! The screws by the way are torx not allen screws and we say they are tamper resistant not tamper proof. The LineLok is not a magic solution for parenting problems - its just another tool in this high tech age that we live in. | |
