Comments on news posted 2004-09-08 17:06:31: A proposed fiber to the home project in Lafayette, Louisiana isn't even built yet (and may never be if Cox or BellSouth get their way). Yet the region is the first to get long-promised upgrades much of Cox middle-America is still waiting for. ..

Extortion

Isn't corporate extortion a wonderful thing?

Let the capitalist battles begin!

No praise needed, yet...

Cox does not deserve any praise until the entire MAC system is brought up to snuff with the HSI system. Does anyone else find it might strange that the ONLY MAC area that has seen the upgrade was Lafayette, in which Cox is facing a possible Muni fiber build? Cox is SCARED and is cleaning up their act. They're parading around Lafyette saying "why should you pay your tax dollars to build a muni fiber network when we offer blazing fast speeds right now!!"
Well, what the commoners don't know is that Cox isn't offering super fast speeds in comparison to what the muni network coudl bring. The Muni Fiber network will create jobs, and will force prices down for customers. Nothing but good can come of it.

Wasted time and effort

To think, if I had spent the last 8 months organizing a Muni effort in my community, instead of asking Cox to improve their system, I'd already have the upgrade!

As it is, the goal is nowhere in sight.

Maybe it's not too late...

The thing is the Bells and the Cable Co.s don't want to partner with their communities (in general, with very few exceptions)to roll out fiber, or better/far reaching services that include everyone. If they would partner and play nice with the munis then there wouldn't be all the muni broadband utilities popping up. But as it stands, the Bells and Cable Co.s are greedy and want all revenue for themselves. Thus, when an offer to "partner" with a muni just to roll out sub-par DSL services that are already nearing obsolescence comes in, they turn their backs and say forget it!

I live near lafayette, and have to say the LUS plan is good.

Of course the LUS plan is good. It's GREAT! And Cox is terrified! They will say and do anything to try and turn a wonderful FTTH and FTTB plan by LUS into a horrible waste of taxpayer dollars or a crime against the democratic process. When all it is about is a choice for services with local accountability and lower prices, not to mention the economic development aspect.

GO LAFAYETTE!!!

Yes is is great this will be a great thing for Lafayette. the cox commercial is wrong anyway. »www.letthepeoplevote.org/include···sons.mov is a link to it. Really cox is just trying to say their service is good but its really NOT. I have a friend in lafayette who has Cox and it SUCKS.

Do we really need to be so connected that Terminator 3 could become a reality? I am happy with my 1.3mb connection and my analog cable TV. The only thing faster connections bring is more whining about file sharing, oh and the possibility of global nuclear destruction because of some miserable virus writer.

I'd be happy with a 1.3mb connection, for about $20/month. Since I have to pay $39.95, I'd like to have the 4.5 connection other Cox subscribers receive for that amount.

Are you kidding? I hope that was sarcasm. If it was not, it was surely the most ignorant bit of opinion I've ever seen.
