Comments on news posted 2004-10-01 17:33:00: CERN and Caltech's recent breach of the 100 petabit-meters/second mark is now old news; users in our all things Unix forum note that attempt is 17% slower than the latest Internet2 speed record. ..

Sick of these?

Is anyone else sick of hearing about these "speed" records? What good is it doing anyone? I don't see my speeds getting faster, and cheaper from this, does anyone else?
Seems to me, there is lots of money out there in the world, and no ons is using it to make the internet better and faster for everyone else. Maybe I am missing something?

That's a cool picture of Speed Racer!

Goes to show that NetBSD has the coding power to push the bits, that's for sure!

over 1800 GIGS in an hour on a single TCP line... 100MB would be like 1 minute

= 1,000,000 internet connection per month

I definitely co-sign, we are never gonna get these technologies, let alone get them at a cheap price. Overseas got connections similar or even better then us for crazy deals. These damn companies keep filling our head with cotton filling. Just do it & give us fullfillment in speeds, not yap yap.

Re: typo?

yea, i don't understand the whole petabit meter thing either.

I wonder what type of data they could have possibly created to take up all those gigabytes.

Maybe it was just a big .txt file.

43 hops over existing infrastructure

what makes this one interesting is that it required 43 hops, 3 times crossing the atlantic, and 450ms to get there over EXISTING Sprint infrastructure on a single 2.8ghz xeon with 1GB RAM.

that, at least to me is amazing.

I guarantee that in the future peeps will be all, "Such and such ISP is ripping me off because I only get 1.5pbms and they wouldn't be doing this if they didn't have a monopoly in my area."

I agree totally. It is good that speeds are increasing and people make a note of it, but it doesn't appply to me right now. I don't even have a gigabet network! I'm still 10/100 Maybe someday this technology will apply to me, but as of right now, I don't even have what is available...

And cost, how much will something like this cost for the home user? Probably alot more than what the Sheriff's department pays me

Big bill

Wonder how big the bill would be at an ISP that charges per MB after 500MB or 1GB / month :-o

Meh

Ask me if I care about backbone speeds...

Why must they torture us broadband users with absymal transfer speeds used by backbones and such?

I agree with that statement. It's human nature to never be happy with what you have. It is that drive that makes us all do better. If we didn't have it, who knows where we would be, if here at all.

Speed record are fun! hihihi

President of an corp : What is the use for internet 2?
Marketing guy: to make speed records and do research on speed records.
PoaC: If we only need a 10 mbits line, wouldn't be cheaper if we use normal internet and encrypt our packets?
Marketing guy: but internet 2 is fun!

Makes as much sense as this »www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/193373 .

Re: Meh

Because in the end, the backbone speed applies, to you, the user.

 Goof for us to

This can be a good thing for us to, if the backbone gets faster and thus cheaper per GB we could get either faster access, cheaper access or both:)
