TV still sucks.

Doesn't matter how it's delivered 95% of TV is pure crap aimed at people who have the sense of humor of a moron.

Now why did I ever pay for this junk?
I hooked up eighty channels and each one stunk
Just brainless blood and guts, and mindless T & A
It's awful, it's putrid, it's crummy, it's stupid, gonna throw my set away
Just my negative opinion.

ADSL2? Get Fiber to the Home so we can interact!

DSL will still be too slow and the answer is FTTH.

I wonder...

What type of picture quality I can get with 478k down and pots of packet loss. Which is exactly what I am getting right now on my DSL line.

bring it on...

there's certainly a market for this. people who hates cable but can't get satllites for whatever reason.

but how long would it take Bells to deploy ADSL2+ in first place?

soon we're gonna see lots of threads with "sync but no tv" issues.

Couldn't you say the same thing about the Internet - 95% is total crap.

Of course, much like tv, the 5% that you do not feel is crap is why you subscribe.

For delivering TV over DSL you need FFTN, I think it's enough for residential market.

Yup. I get cable because of:

•NHL Centre Ice (though, not this year)
    •Toonami
    •Adult Swim
    •Discovery Channel networks

The rest, I pretty much never watch.

Re: bring it on...

I think it may be a good thing. Only thing is if that DSL loses sync, your TV will lose the signal as well. So in my case not sure if I would want it, though my sync problem looks like it's fixed (crossing my fingers). But hey this could very well drive Cable out of business. If people like SBC offer DSL cheaper than what Cable Providers charge for Cable Modem service, TV will likely be less as well.

It is time to bring the GREEDY Cable providers to their knees. Time Warner especially. Maybe we can then move to Ala Carte and pay for the channels that WE want, not what "They" want to give us.

Yes, but the internet is an entirely different medium. I don't feel the two can be compared.
One thing I was thinking that may come good out of this, is since there is limited bandwidth maybe they would have an option do purchase just the channels you wants. So I could order only Fox for Simpsons, and King of the Hill, Cartoon Channel, IFC, SCI-FI, Weather Channel, CNN, and just a few others and not be forced to pay for channels in a bundle I will never watch or ever want to watch. This would increase my chance of buying pay-for-tv programing.

The comparison is valid for the point I was making - both mediums have large amounts of crap, but enough "quality" so that people generally subscribe.

Of course, everyone's definition of quality is different. If there were no other channels, I would get satellite just for ESPN and HBO, but others consider those channels worthless.

Re: bring it on...

just did google on adsl2+ and found this:

"downstream data rates are increased to up to 24 Mbps on phone lines as long as 3,000 feet, and 20 Mbps on lines as long as 5,000 feet."

so, FTTH is not really necessary. FTTC should be adequate for this.

i'm curious how all this would work...
STBs better come with built-in 802.11g unless running cat5 to every room is included in stardard installation.

How about suffice to say we disagree on that point. But as you say there is enough "quality" for enough people to subscribe.

TWC don't get it...

..They appear to want to offer ONLY thru some kind of closed end system which raises the costs. Unless there is some FCC Law against it why can't they just offer a range of Tv Channels whcih the consumer and pick from and pay p.m. Then the user could tune in via a media PC? I am sure that this is the way to go rather than trying to shift some protected and expensive BOX.
I like many others already get a pretty fast broadband service so why attach it to only an ADSL2+ roll-out?

Channel Choice

When I can pick and pay for only the channels that I want to watch will cable be a good deal. Since there is more profit to bundle channels this will not change until cable has to compete with other providers in the same area. Yes some areas do have more than one cable provider but not enough. There is not enough demand for someone to build new to compete and I am against cable doing what the telcos do with reselling lines.

The best way to be heard is for all people to cancel cable then tell their cable company what they have to do before anyone will sign back up. The company will then make a choice. The problem is you will never get enough people to turn the idiot box off to make this successful.

Fiber has a long way to go before they can really challenge the cable companies.

Try enjoying the dropouts and the small resolution you will get from that.

It can't even support HDTV, much less a regular resolution TV stream.
