| | SBC's Property While I agree that SBC should not be a monopoly, I also agree with their resoning. If they build it, it is their property.
If competitors didn't build it, it should not be used by them without permission. Simple. You wouldnt want your neighbor leaching off your electricity by running an extension cord between the houses would you?
I do agree that SBC should deploy better servces fiber-wise. They say that their coverage will include TV, voice, and other services... how will that happen with ADSL2+? Most fade off the specturm after 10000 feet. Only those close enough to an RT/CO can even get the full 25mb/s. I think they should run fiber on the poles and possibly use a small copper wire-in from a small node on the poles (is that possible? fiber to the curb...) or simply run fiber to the home.
I believe they will have enough competition in years to come with other VoIP companies, cable television companies (and possibly Ultrawideband), satelite companies, and new wireless technologies (WiMax?) to have enough competition for lower prices.
They should, however, let competition use older DSL equiptment for low-income families that cant afford the higher-speed internet.
I may not be seeing the whole picture but that is what I drew from it, I say let SBC use their own property as they will. Cable, satelite, etc will not let them monopolize everywhere. Besides, Verizon and others are also building fiber-lines which will also compete to some extent. I believe that will keep the service prices resonable, and have them roll-out faster. |
