MPAA Becoming the RIAA

I hope they don't start doing RIAA style stuff. I have completly lost respect for the RIAA. I don't want to lose repect for the MPAA too.

interesting

I am curious to see how this goes.

If they focus on trading of unreleased or still in theaters movies, I think they will do better than if they clamp down on all movie trading.

I think he means that the MPAA never really had any respect to be lost.

Re: Here we go

Nah. We all know how this goes. Lawyers hired by Fat-cat studio executives put on their jackboots, grab the whips and chains, and commence to goose-stepping all over a mob of small children, teenagers, and young ignorant college- age students.
I see NO reason to imprison or punish people over "illegal possession of copyrighted material"
Books are copyrighted aren't they? How come Doubleday is not doing the same thing to those of us who read and copy text illegally?

Re: interesting

RIAA goes after folks no matter if the songs are old or new. Why would the MPAA do it any differently? They still want you to BUY old movies on DVD/VHS last time I checked.

time

Well we knew this day would come. Time to use a proxy for BT. This is possible right?

All that's gonna happen is what happened to the RIAA, people are just gonna rebel. Most people would still rather have a copy of the movie in physical form, suing those who dl digital copies is just going to hurt them...but ah well.

Re: interesting

I agree.

Now, I admit I have downloaded a couple of movies that were still in theaters (both Spidermans and Dawn of the Dead)...but, in my defense, that was after I had already seen it on the big screen (more than once for the first Spiderman), and I also shelled out the $20-something for the DVDs when they came out.

I still think that the MPAA has less to lose than the RIAA when it comes to people sharing files. To me, there's no substitute for the big screen experience. And, DVD quality is so much better than those "cam" downloads. Even though I downloaded a couple, they still got their money from me.

Well

All of the CAM movies I understand (the ones people take to theaters for new releases), but they need to look on the inside for the people who give out the DVD of the movies some 2-3 months before they come out like Return of the King & Van Helsing. You can get Irobot which doesn't come out till Dec now and I am sure AVP will be on there in a matter of weeks!

Re: MPAA Becoming the RIAA

I would say he means that
1. who cares if you lost respect for the RIAA or MPAA.
2. How can you lose respect for a company enforcing their rights to a product?
3. FYI it's not the RIAA or the MPAA...if the artists want to give away their rights to the product, they freely can...the RIAA and MPAA is the buffer between the artists and the fans...and the RIAA and MPAA work at the request of the artists.
