You know, you CAN protect yourself....

Protowall and various other tools can help sheild your identity a bit. Just becuase you are connected to a torrent doesn't mean you're getting anything from it. MPAA and RIAA connect to them constantly looking for people to send nasty letters to. They don't actually get anything outside of a user list. If you keep the known addresses blocked from connecting to you, they can only place you at the scene.

I think its high time the law take a second look at the way things are going. Sometimes the law simply isn't sufficient to deal with new technology. Lawmakers need to get with the program here. Copyrights were never intended to protect someone from having their property downloaded for private use. It was intended to protect from someone else selling their intellectual property. Times have changed. Laws should follow suit. Do I have a solution? No. But I can offer the problems for evaluation. In this day and age of copied media and easy to access torrent sites, things MUST be changed. 35% of all internet traffic is BT... how much of that is currently "illegal"? Do we throw everyone in jail? Sue everyone? How many people are still buying cds, movies, books, and games? Enough that the market is still flooded with garbage, letting me know its not a real problem. We are still more than willing to pay for things, and most of us are NOT trying to resell someone elses hard work. But we are treated as such. Go figure.

Unavoidable

Usenet

BT being so popular only means usenet isn't getting the publicity it deserves... Where I can get a huge file off usenet at about 2.4 mbits/s, it's usually only 1/10 the speed off BT, and 1/100 the speed off KaZaA... gotta love that usenet =)

Who cares? It's just change. Deal.

Why do we even care?
Point and counterpoint...

The legal system has better things to take care of than making sure some company gets their money.

Oh no, then they won't be able to make movies anymore, we must protect them in the interest of art. No. They make too much money. Spend $100+ million on a movie? Yea... they "need" to spend that. I've seen great indie movies. Clearly, if people are pirating, then the "legal" price is too high, and people find alternative means.

BT is my hero. In enables me to download at watch 6-8 shows per week on my own schedule, instead of sacrificing homework/social life in the evenings. Plus, I don't have to watch commercials.

Oh no! The commercials fund the shows!
Yes. Yesteryear. This is a new age - one where we have the ability to easily capture, edit, and share cable broadcasts. Funding may have to be restructured. It's unfortunate for those that may cause work for - deal with it.

DO you want some cheese to go with all that whine?
